NEWCASTLE CATHEDRAL
SEE US IN A NEW LIGHT
Man of Mystery
Following careful conservation work, the Cathedral’s ‘Unknown Knight’ is nearly ready to be moved to its new home in St Margaret’s Chapel.
Last month, we spoke with David Carrington, Founder and Managing Director of Skillington Workshop Ltd, about the process of lifting the stone effigy out of the niche that it had been tucked away in for over one hundred years.
Why is this statue of a mysterious warrior so significant? And what clues do we have as to his identity? In this follow-up video, David looks at the knight in closer detail…
A new exhibition, Stories in the Stones (due to launch in summer 2021), will celebrate the history and heritage of the Cathedral and highlight one of the possible candidates for who the knight might have been.
The re-presentation of the Unknown Knight is part of ongoing capital works, fundamental to the Cathedral’s National Lottery Heritage Fund project, Common Ground in Sacred Space. To be among the first to find out details about the Cathedral’s reopening, sign up to our newsletter.
