A Time of Remembrance: Honouring Life, Loss and Hope this November

Published October 2024

November is a significant time of remembrance in the Church of England calendar – a period when we are invited to reflect on life, death and hope beyond loss.

At Newcastle Cathedral, this year’s observations of All Saints’ Day on Friday 1 November and All Souls’ Day on Saturday 2 November coincide with two powerful exhibitions.

Exhibitions

Icons on Ammunition Boxes

Ongoing until Wednesday 6 November

These icons painted on ammunition boxes from the frontline in Ukraine, serve as silent witnesses to the ongoing conflict. This conceptual project by Ukrainian artists Sofia Atlantova and Oleksandr Klymenko aims to raise awareness and support for those affected by war. All proceeds from the sale of icons and souvenir postcards will go towards purchasing medical vehicles for frontline units in Ukraine.

Portraits with Purpose: Continuing Bonds

Saturday 26 October – Tuesday 26 November

In collaboration with St Oswald’s Hospice, artist Leanne Pearce has created 12 poignant portraits, working with bereaved and pre-bereaved families who have accessed the hospice’s bereavement support and/or other care services. The collection provides a positive, creative focus for bereaved or pre-bereaved families, and supports them in their ‘continuing bonds’ process.

This commemoration of the departed allows us to remember the lives of lost loved ones, featuring the singing of Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem by the Cathedral Choir. We Will Remember Them

Sung Eucharist at 10am on Remembrance Sunday, observed this year on Sunday 10 November, will include the annual two-minute silence in honour of those who have died in military service, particularly in the World Wars and subsequent conflicts.

The traditional Observation of Remembrance for Armistice Day will be led by the Dean of Newcastle in St Nicholas Square on Monday 11 November at 11am. This will be another opportunity for prayer and reflection for those who have sacrificed their lives.

Celebrating Good Causes this Advent

During Advent, we will welcome events held by local and national charities, including the Marie Curie ‘Lights to Remember’ service, honouring friends and family who are living with terminal illness or who are no longer with us.
