SEE US IN A NEW LIGHT
April/May 2021 Video Update
As we move into the final phase of the Cathedral’s redevelopment, our Common Ground in Sacred Space Project Manager, Lindy Gilliland, presents this short video update, showing some of the work that has taken place throughout April and May.
Construction work has continued in the churchyards and on the spacious plaza leading to the Cathedral’s newly formed east entrance.
Design ingenuity has been called for due to the sloping ground of the Cathedral’s old car park, which overlays an older graveyard. There was also the unexpected discovery of a number of below-ground vaults which meant the envisioned pathway had to be constructed in such a way as to leave the tombs undisturbed.
Meanwhile, conservators have been back on-site and the remodelling of the interior spaces is nearing completion. The digger has been replaced by the ‘spyder’ with its extending arm which carries plasterers and painters way up high.
The Cathedral will reopen in summer 2021 following the arrival of specially commissioned furniture and fitting of improved lighting for services and public events. Visitors can also look forward to a new café and retail area and the return of ‘Lantern Tower Tours’.
