Cathedral Closure Statement

Sadly, for now at least, we have decided that the great Cathedral doors must remain closed.

In March this year, reluctantly and with heavy heart, we followed the Government and National Church advice and closed the Cathedral for worship and to our cherished visitors. In the months before, we had spent a great deal of energy and passion trying to offer a refreshed and warm hospitality to all who would cross our thresholds, so we closed the great doors and turned those enormous keys with immeasurably sadness.

Of course, we have continued (and will continue) to offer regular streamed worship and updates on our website and through social media about all that is happening within the Cathedral’s environs as our Making Common Ground Sacred Space has developed, even as our communities have been in lockdown. Without doubt the spring of 2020 will be one to remembered in our community annals. In our prayers and pastoral care, we have tried to faithfully remember so many in our own community, and across the globe, who have been sorely hit by the cruel impact of COVID-19 and others whose faithful and quietly heroic activity has supported and helped us all in such a strange and for some painful time.

From 15 June 2020, permission has been given for cathedrals along with other places of worship to open for supervised private prayer. We have, however, decided to delay any re-opening of our Cathedral. The present state of the major refurbishment works render it nigh on impossible to be confident that we can maintain the appropriate social distancing and hygiene regimes that are necessary to make visitors safe.

Sadly, therefore for now, the great Cathedral doors will remain closed to members of the public wanting to make a visit.

However, be assured that we will do all we can to re-open the Cathedral as and when we can safely do so. Until then we commend to you our online presence and assure you that we will hold our communities deeply and faithfully in our daily prayers. We are assured that this time will pass and that God-willing soon we will be able to welcome you again and introduce you to our refurbished building. Then our treasured sacred space can once again become common ground.
