The cope is a liturgical or ceremonial vestment worn by members of the clergy and usually by Bishops, Deans, Canons and Archdeacons. Originally a ‘cappa’ in Latin, meaning cape, the cope has a long history. In 2014, Newcastle Cathedral commissioned two Yorkshire based artists, Linda Schwab and Sally Greaves-Lord, to design a new set.
The result is not only beautiful but an intertwining of worship and our northern heritage. The bright and colourful shield-shaped hoods are each dedicated to a particular saint: St Cuthbert, St Osmund, St Benedict Biscop, St Finan and the Cathedral’s patron, St Nicholas.
Launched in anticipation of the upcoming installation of the new Dean of Newcastle, the Revd Canon Lee Batson, on 14 October, this exhibition offers a captivating showcase of these remarkable designs.
