Listen to the music of William Byrd (c. 1540 – 1623), one of the greatest composers of the Tudor era, sung by the choir of Newcastle Cathedral and accompanied by the unique voice of the Wetheringsett Organ, currently on loan from the Royal College of Organists.
The Wetheringsett organ was built by the organ-builders Goetze & Gwynn in 2002. It is a speculative reconstruction of an English organ of around 1530, based on the soundboard found in recent years at Wetheringsett in Suffolk. Learn more about this instrument.
Preceding this evensong will be a professional masterclass on the Wetheringsett organ as part of the day-long ‘Byrd in Newcastle’ RCO workshop.
