The Season of Remembrance at Newcastle Cathedral
The month of November is when the Church celebrates All Saints Day (November 1st) – celebrating the community of all Christian people, past and present – and All Souls Day (November 2nd) – remembering our loved ones who have died.
We are very excited to be able to welcome a congregation back into the building for worship on All Saints Day. Our carefully socially distanced Sunday morning services will be open for people to attend by pre-booking, and will also be livestreamed on our YouTube channel. Meanwhile, our Sunday evening services will continue to be available online too – but with no congregation in attendance.
It will be necessary for those who wish to attend in person to wear masks throughout the service, so we are tailoring the morning liturgies to last for a maximum of 50 minutes. If you wish to book a seat to attend, please ring the Cathedral Secretary on 0191 232 1939 (The office is staffed Monday to Friday between 9am and 12noon only at present.)
We have some beautiful, atmospheric services coming up in this “season of remembrance” and we would love you to join us in person, or at home.
Sunday 1st November – ALL SAINTS DAY
9.30am Congregational Sung Eucharist
11am Congregational Sung Eucharist
(Livestream on YouTube begins at 11am)
4pm Online Service of Readings and Music for All Souls with the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed
In the meantime, our weekly pattern of worship continues, and if you are unable to join us physically, we extend a warm invitation to come and worship with us remotely:
Morning Prayer – Monday to Friday at 8.30am
For a reflective start to focus your day, why not set aside half an hour to gather in prayer with a “virtual community” from across the city, region and world on our Facebook page? Or join in later on to suit your timetable.
Evening “Daily Reflection” – Monday to Wednesday
Posted early evening each day on our YouTube Channel, gather with us at a time that suits you, for a simple service of prayer lasting about 15 minutes, which includes a short reflection on the Gospel reading for the day, by a member of the Cathedral Ministry Team.
Choral Evensong with “Daily Reflection” – Thursday and Friday
As above, but filmed in the Cathedral with the Cathedral Choir singing a traditional Choral Evensong, with an anthem, prayers and reflection. Available on our YouTube channel, the service lasts about 40 minutes and airs at 5.30pm, though, of course you can watch it whenever you wish!
… and finally, keep an eye out for a change in this pattern.
Compline and “Daily Reflection” – Tuesdays from November 10th
This beautiful, and ancient monastic evening service will be sung by the Cathedral’s Schola Cantorum – a choir of women’s voices. Filmed in the Cathedral, and lasting about half an hour, the service will also include the reflection on the Gospel for the day. It will become a part of our weekly pattern, and “go live” on YouTube at 5.30pm.
