Step back in time at Newcastle Cathedral with a screening of ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ (1923) starring the legendary Lon Chaney, featuring live musical accompaniment on the Cathedral organ.
This timeless gem of Gothic silent cinema tells the tale by Victor Hugo, also known for his masterpiece ‘Les Misérables’, of Quasimodo, the bellringer of Notre Dame, and his unrequited love for the enchanting Esmeralda.
This rendition of the classic story is celebrated for Lon Chaney’s extraordinary portrayal, which earned him the title ‘the man of a thousand faces,’ and for its painstakingly detailed Hollywood sets, meticulously crafted to recreate the grandeur of 15th-century Paris.
The evocative score, improvised by Drew Cantrill-Fenwick, the Director of Music at St George’s, Jesmond, will skilfully breathe new life into the film. Join us within the historic walls of one of Newcastle’s oldest sacred buildings for a truly atmospheric evening.
