Newcastle’s Trafalgar Day service, hosted by the Lord Mayor’s office, will take place at Newcastle Cathedral.
At this service, prayers will be said, and wreaths laid at the memorial to local and national hero Admiral Lord Collingwood. Following the service, many of the group will then move on to the Collingwood Monument, Tynemouth, for the annual ‘Toast to the Admiral’.
Vice Admiral Collingwood assumed command and secured triumph on the fateful day when his friend, Lord Admiral Nelson, was mortally wounded aboard HMS Victory. Under his leadership, even the most severely damaged British ships emerged triumphant from that tempestuous battle in 1805. Collingwood’s ties to the area are deeply rooted, as he was born on the Side, close to St Nicholas’ Church (now the Cathedral). It was at this very church that he was baptised and later married.
