Landscape architects’ update

Project Manager Lindy Gilliland sheds light on the progress being made in the Cathedral churchyards by landscape architects HarrisonStevens

After a bout of bad weather, the programme outside has picked up pace, with new flowerbed retaining walls under construction and the enlarged walkway being paved.

On my most recent visit, I interviewed Chris Shiels (Associate Director, HarrisonStevens) and Ollie Phillips (Architectural Assistant)…

As you’ll have seen from the video, hundreds of ‘bricks’ for the decorative ribbon, which will wind its way through the churchyards as a contemplative trail, have arrived on site.

The words and phrases you can see are the ‘Newcastle Beatitudes’: blessings, written by the Cathedral clergy, with specific relevance to the city.

These are really striking to the eye and are conceived as a very special element of our interpretation.

This work is part of our National Lottery Heritage Fund project, Common Ground in Sacred Space, which is due for completion in summer 2021.
