NEWCASTLE CATHEDRAL
SEE US IN A NEW LIGHT
Our heritage project
Our heritage project, Common Ground in Sacred Space, revolves around reviving the medieval role of our building as a dynamic hub for worship, community and business activity. The project focuses on:
- The churchyards, providing a fitting setting for the building and areas for relaxation and reflection
- The nave, removing the pews for new flexible seating, identifying archaeological features of the building and adding underfloor heating beneath a new floor
- The ledger stones, protecting and conserving over 130 grave covers currently at risk
- Entrances and new visitor facilities, improving access throughout and sharing heritage stories with all of our visitors through imaginative interpretation
New project staff, volunteers and partners will allow us to programme a broad range of activities and events suitable for a wide range of tastes. We want to become more relevant to our city as a special place of discovery, prayer and community participation whilst developing a sustainable future for Newcastle Cathedral.
