SEE US IN A NEW LIGHT
Key Stage 3, 4 and 5
Newcastle Cathedral’s NEW Learning Programme launches in summer 2021, following a huge transformation supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Below is a small selection of the activities and workshops that will be available for schools. Sign up to our Learning Mailing List to keep up to date with our exciting new offers and events for families, nurseries, schools, educators and more.
A New Light
KS3 – RE, Art & History
This 2-hour workshop will explore Newcastle Cathedral as an enduring place of symbolism, meaning and belonging, but one that is constantly changing too. Students will explore the way the building communicates meaning in the Christian faith, but also faces challenges of interpreting belief and practice in new ways and what that means for the community, particularly in the light of the recent refurbishment project Common Ground in Sacred Space.
Students will investigate the changes and create and present their own designs for the Cathedral in a guided roleplay board meeting exercise.
History in Action
KS3 – History
This 2-hour workshop will encourage students to gain historical perspective and understand local connections to national history in a hands-on way. Students will become historians and archaeologists and make explorations and discoveries using the fascinating Tudor and Medieval objects of history in the Cathedral to find clues that help uncover their secrets.
Students will also learn about the importance of the conservation of these artefacts.
Newcastle Cathedral is an amazing space to discover remarkable artworks and artefacts, develop your students’ understanding of the Christian faith and learn about the history of Newcastle. To arrange a bespoke tour and Q&A session with a member of the Learning Team and/or a member of the clergy, please email us.
On our Learning Resources page, you can find video workshops, as well as talks about conservation cleaning and exploring and dating historic artefacts.
More resources will be added to the website in the autumn. Please sign up to our Learning Mailing List to be notified.
