Living the Lantern with Laurie Crow

Published December 2024

In the Middle Ages, Newcastle Cathedral’s Lantern Tower guided ships navigating the River Tyne. Today, the Cathedral’s Lantern Initiative aims to serve as a beacon for those facing challenging circumstances in life.

Laurie Crow, our Lantern Initiative Lead, writes…

I began as the Cathedral’s Lantern Initiative Lead in October, following the inspiring Revd Jon Canessa. As someone in recovery from addiction with nearly 20 years of experience in the North East charity sector, this role is deeply meaningful to me. My connection to the Lantern began four years ago when I joined Jon’s Recovery Church group. Now, I have the privilege of leading a project close to my heart.

In my first weeks, I’ve met incredible people contributing to the Cathedral’s ‘Radical Welcome’. Groups supported by the Lantern Initiative include ‘Speaking Up Together’ (a self-advocacy group for adults with learning disabilities), those seeking sanctuary, and members of the street life community who come to the Cathedral for warmth and essential services, such as medical advice from a nurse who visits twice weekly.

As the weather grows colder, we’re helping rough sleepers find shelter and connecting them with council services. A key partner is the Oswin Project, which operates Café 16 in the Cathedral’s refectory and advocates for criminal justice reform. On 20 December, Café 16 will partner with Changing Lives for the North East Christmas Meal Appeal, serving meals to those facing homelessness and other challenges. The Lantern Initiative will help by preparing gift bags for guests and spreading the word among our own networks.

Last month, the Cathedral hosted a powerful service for White Ribbon Day, with brave men and women sharing stories about gender-based violence. We already collaborate with Women’s Reform, a local charity supporting women and mothers at risk of child removal, by hosting weekly women’s spaces. In the new year, we’ll introduce a 10-week behaviour change programme with Harbour, an organisation dedicated to supporting individuals and families impacted by abuse from partners, former partners, or other family members.

As we approach Christmas, a ‘Community Tree’ located by the Cathedral’s main entrance will be decorated by groups connected to the Lantern Initiative. The first ornaments – a collection of handcrafted willow stars – were created by homeless visitors who currently have no trees of their own. During the workshop, participants from across the Lantern’s community came together to share hot drinks, mince pies and moments of connection.

Looking ahead, the Lantern Initiative will continue to bring light and hope to all who seek it, embodying the Cathedral’s values of compassion and radical inclusion.
