Farewell to Canon Lesley Towers

On Sunday 19 June, we held a special service of Choral Evensong to say farewell to Canon Lesley Towers, to celebrate her years of ministry and service, and to wish her all the best in her retirement. Canon Lesley has served as personal assistant to three Bishops of Newcastle. Her service of 28 years began in 1994 for Bishop Alec and continued for the duration of Bishop Martin and Bishop Christine’s episcopal ministry. Over the years, Canon Lesley has not only provided support to the Bishops of Newcastle, she has also been a valuable source of support and information for clergy and parishes too – including the Cathedral – for which she will be greatly missed.

Canon Lesley, who remains a lay canon of the Cathedral, is photographed here with the Dean, Bishop Christine Hardman, and Bishop Mark.

Wine at Holy Communion

We have now reintroduced the chalice – the wine – for everyone at Holy Communion. You should not feel pressured into receiving the wine; the wine remains (as it has always been) an option. You must not ‘intinct’ the wafer, i.e. if you are going to receive the wine, you must drink from the chalice. Covid mitigations will remain in review, following guidance. If you have any queries, please speak to a member of clergy.

Eucharistic Ministers

Were you a Eucharistic minister before the first lockdown? Did you help to distribute wine at Holy Communion on a Sunday? Perhaps you would like to start doing this important ministry?

Click here to email Revd Benjamin Jarvis if you would like to join/re-join the rota.

Parking Permits

The present Sunday Parking permits have a printing error and will continue to be valid until the end of June. The Local Authority has assured us that the traffic wardens have been made aware of this.

The Local Authority has not yet made a decision about post-June arrangements, and we will let everybody know when we receive more information. However, our advice is not to presume any parking permits will be available post the end of June unless we inform you otherwise.

Choral Evensong

You are welcome to join us to hear the magnificent Cathedral Choir. Choral Evensong takes place during term time on Mondays, Tuesdays & Fridays at 5:30pm and on Sundays at 4pm. See our What’s On calendar for exceptions.

If you are attending in person, simply take a seat in the Quire or Nave.

Please note, the Choir will be on their break during the following times in 2022, and Said Evening Prayer will take place instead:

Half termFriday 27 May – Sunday 5 June (return date)
Summer holidayMonday 11 July – Sunday 4 September (return date)
Half termMonday 24 – Sunday 30 October (return date)

If you would like to join us online, the live-streamed service will be accessible via YouTube channel from around five minutes before the start time.
