Newcastle Cathedral’s choirs are essential to the daily rhythm of this sacred space. In recent years, the Choir has gained national acclaim through BBC Radio 4 Sunday Worship broadcasts, an appearance on Classic FM, and the album ‘A Year at Newcastle’ by Regent Records.
Depending on the day of the week, Choral Evensong features a different choir (or section of one of our choirs), each one providing a unique musical contribution…
The main Cathedral Choir comprises professional Lay Clerks (making up the back row) and student Choral Scholars who contribute to the Cathedral’s music programme while furthering their musical education.
Choristers (boys and girls from School Year 3 onwards) undergo musical training, infusing choral services with a youthful and angelic quality.
This choir offers a smooth transition for boys undergoing voice changes, allowing them to stay engaged in cathedral singing.
Tenor and bass choral scholars and Senior Girl Choristers (School Years 10-13) occasionally offer vocal support to this group. These collaborations offer a more diverse repertoire and opportunities for older teenagers of all genders to perform together.
The ChoriStarters Training Choir introduces young children to the world of being a Chorister and the unique learning and enjoyment this brings. From Year 3 onwards, children can audition to become Cathedral Choristers.
