SUMMARY:Mothers’ Union Monthly Midday Prayers and Eucharist
DESCRIPTION:Please note: The Mothers’ Union Midday Prayers for April 2026 will take place on the second Thursday of the month\, 9 April\, instead of the usual date\, due to the Diocesan Chrism Eucharist occurring the previous week. \n2026 is a landmark anniversary year for Mothers’ Union\, the global Christian movement that has supported families and strengthened communities in the UK and around the world for 150 years. With four million members across 84 countries\, Mothers’ Union serves people of all faiths and backgrounds through practical action\, prayer\, and advocacy. \nThe Diocese of Newcastle was among the first to welcome Mothers’ Union shortly after its own founding in 1882. Emily Wilberforce\, wife of Newcastle’s first Bishop\, became the inaugural MU President. In more recent years\, MU Presidents in the diocese have also held the honorary role of Lay Canon at the Cathedral. \nMembers gather on the first Thursday of each month for Midday Prayers in St George’s Chapel at the Cathedral and are warmly invited to stay for the 12:30pm Eucharist. Before or after the service\, the group meets at Café 16 in the Cathedral refectory for fellowship and conversation. \nIf you would like to join them or find out more\, please contact the Revd Anne Marr\, Chaplain to the Mothers’ Union in Newcastle Diocese\, at chaplain@munewcastle.org.uk \n \nRead all about Mothers’ Union Newcastle’s 150th anniversary celebrations here. \n

SUMMARY:‘Brokenness’ – Newcastle Mothers’ Union Display for 16 Days of Activism
DESCRIPTION:From 25 November to 10 December\, Newcastle Mothers’ Union will present their annual display in the Eastern Chapels\, supporting the international ‘16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence’. \nFounded in 1876\, Mothers’ Union supports families and gives a voice to disadvantaged women. Newcastle’s branch\, established in 1882\, has been part of this mission for nearly 150 years\, campaigning all year round for causes such as those against domestic abuse. \nThis year\, the display will focus on the theme of ‘Brokenness’ – reflecting the experiences of those affected by gender-based violence: broken hearts\, broken spirits\, and broken families. \nAt the centre of the display is a cross\, roughly constructed from scrap wood\, adorned with symbols of brokenness. Alongside this\, the words from Isaiah\, spoken by Jesus\, offer hope and the promise of ‘breaking free’: \n“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me… to proclaim freedom to the captives… and to let the oppressed go free.” — Luke 4:18-19 \nVisit Newcastle Mothers’ Union’s website \nLearn more about 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence \n
