NEWCASTLE CATHEDRAL
A BEACON OF LIGHT
Remembrance Weekend 2022
“At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.”
Join us at Newcastle Cathedral for services and events marking Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.
Friday 11 November, 11am | Two Minute Silence
On Armistice Day, join the Dean of Newcastle in St Nicholas Square at 11am to observe two minutes of silence together.
Saturday 12 November, 6pm | Talk: Raemaekers and Remembrance
This poignant discussion will explore artist Louis Raemaekers’ commission to paint St George and the Dragon in memory of Brigadier-General Riddell of the Northumberland Fusiliers.
Join researcher, Kelsey Graham, and conservator, Louise Bainbridge, as they talk about the history and symbolism behind the painting and what recent conservation has revealed.
Louis Raemaekers was a Dutch cartoonist and one of the most influential anti-German propagandists of the First World War. Raemaekers’ work was incredibly important in uplifting and maintaining public morale both in his native Netherlands and in the UK. The Cathedral painting was a gift from Brigadier-General Riddell’s widow and was conserved in 2021.

Sunday 13 November, 10am | Sung Eucharist for Remembrance Sunday
Join us in remembering those who have given their lives for their country in conflict, and those serving who put their lives at risk today. All are welcome to attend this service, which will also include an observation of the national two-minute silence at 11am. The service will also be livestreamed via our YouTube channel.
