Wellbeing & Discovery season at Newcastle Cathedral

This spring, Newcastle Cathedral’s ‘Wellbeing & Discovery’ season includes opportunities to try new skills, discuss important issues and spend time exploring what’s important to our individual and collective wellbeing.

Light: Northern Potters Association

Responding to the theme of ‘light’, this collection of ceramic works includes sculptures, pots and lamps, showcasing the incredible skill, creativity and talent of artists from across the North East.

Lose Yourself…

Tender Kaleidescape

Saturday 28 May – Monday 6 June 2022

Experience peace, space, movement and sound in this site-specific artwork by artist Alexandra Hughes. Responding to shapes, patterns and symbolism from around the Cathedral, Alexandra has created a kaleidoscopic journey through the Nave. You are invited to encounter ephemeral colours from the Spring Equinox with captured, printed and painted imagery.

Walking the Labyrinth

Saturday 28 May & Saturday 9 July 2022, 10:30am – 12:30pm

You are invited to pause, to step away from the rush and chatter of everyday life and enter a gentle, still space. Dr Jackie Drew, a Veriditas-trained labyrinth facilitator, will offer the opportunity to walk the labyrinth, using a flat canvas labyrinth and hand-held labyrinths.

The Great Outdoors

Cathedrals Cycle Route

People are being encouraged to get on their bikes once again as the Cathedrals Cycle Route returns for a second year. The challenge returns with a relay event starting at Newcastle Cathedral on 6 June. Cyclists are invited to follow the route at their leisure and collect a stamp from each of the 42 Church of England cathedrals.

The Angel’s Way

North East England is the Christian Crossroads of the British Isles, and to celebrate this, The Northern Saints Trails have been established – a series of six long-distance walking trails based on ancient pilgrimage routes. As part of The Angel’s Way, you are invited to stop at Newcastle Cathedral and discover our various depictions of the Northern Saints.

Put a Spring in Your Step

Dare You Climb the Tower?

Various dates throughout June and July, to be confirmed

Stretch those legs and climb the 162 steps of Newcastle Cathedral’s iconic Lantern Tower, in these pre-bookable guided tours. Reaching the rooftop, you’ll be met with breathtaking panoramic views of the city, the River Tyne and Gateshead. A virtual experience will soon be available for those unable to climb the stairs.

Community Singing Group

Singing with other people releases feel-good neurochemicals and is proven to boost mood and self-esteem. This group meets most Wednesday and sings a variety of styles including pop, folk, gospel, and blues. No previous experience (or musical talent) required; everybody is welcome!

We provide the art supplies; you chill out and doodle, sketch or scribble to your heart’s content. Take inspiration from the Cathedral’s art, history, and amazing architecture, creating a mini masterpiece using whatever materials you have to hand!

You’re invited to let your mind relax every Friday, building up and letting go of your worries using building blocks on the East Terrace. There’s no age limit, meaning that however old you are, you can join in… with no obligation to tidy up afterwards!
