NEWCASTLE CATHEDRAL
A BEACON OF LIGHT
What is a Safe Space?
An exhibition of digital art by participants from Crisis Skylight Newcastle runs at Newcastle Cathedral from Thursday 12 August 2021.
Throughout the spring of 2021, the group worked collaboratively to create digital-based artworks that focused on the topics of ‘safe spaces’. This was a difficult subject for many to discuss, considering that everyone participating had experienced homelessness in some way, at some point, in their lives.
Together, the group explored different ways to express themselves, their identities and experiences, both through digital means and creative writing. They explored digital film, photography, sound, collage and language to create a diverse range of artworks.
The exhibition unpacks the concept of safe spaces and discusses what they may or may not be and where you may, or may not, find them, whether that be outside in nature, within and inside space, in memories, or within music or dance.
The participants have produced an emotive, challenging, and evocative body of work, which you will be able to see at the Cathedral this summer.
