SUMMARY:Women Behind Bars: Life in Newcastle Prison\, 1828–1925 (Exhibition)
DESCRIPTION:What was it like to be a woman behind bars in 19th and early-20th-century Newcastle? \nJoin us for a powerful exhibition\, coinciding with International Women’s Day (8 March)\, which uncovers the hidden histories of women in Newcastle Prison. \nDrawing on Newcastle Prison: A History 1828–1925 (Tyne Bridge Publishing\, 2025)\, the exhibition brings to light the stories of young girls\, women affected by poverty and addiction\, and suffragettes who challenged the boundaries of their time. Together\, these voices reveal the realities of crime\, punishment and resilience in a society shaped by inequality. \nThe exhibition incorporates the ‘Story Chair’\, developed for Newcastle Cathedral in 2023 through a unique collaboration involving women with lived experience of the criminal justice system. The Story Chair has since toured several other venues\, carrying profound meaning for the women who contributed to its creation and ensuring authentic representation.\n \nThe exhibition is open free of charge during the Cathedral’s standard opening hours – no booking required. \nNewcastle Prison: A History 1828–1925 is available to purchase from the Cathedral retail space and the Newcastle Gaol website. \nThe Story Chair was a collaborative project involving Changing Lives\, Northumbria University\, and the National Trust\, with additional support from the North East Probation Service and the British Academy. \nWatch the video below to learn about the development of the Story Chair\, created by North East furniture maker Nick James\, who worked closely with the women involved in the project.

SUMMARY:God is in the Detail (Photographic Exhibition by Alan\, Cathedral Verger)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a photographic exhibition by Alan Edington\, Verger at Newcastle Cathedral for 15 years. \nAlan says\, “My role is all about the often-unnoticed\, behind-the-scenes care and attention that keeps this building welcoming for people from all walks of life who come to seek God. \n“I first picked up a camera in 1999 – I’m not sure why. By 2005\, feeling as though I was going around in circles\, I enrolled as a mature student at Northumbria University to study Contemporary Photography. \n“These photographs began as a personal project alongside my university work\, exploring various ideas and themes. It’s a project that has continued ever since\, with new images added recently. \n“Things are not always as clear as they seem at first glance\, and the phrase ‘The devil is in the detail’ reminds us to pay close attention. Jesus’s words\, ‘Seek\, and you shall find’\, offer a more hopeful vision of God who can be found everywhere and in everything – if we take the time to look. \n“Yet\, from the sidelines\, observing this world\, it can sometimes feel hard to see any sign of God. Perhaps\, though\, the signs are all around us – it’s just that we don’t always notice them. \n“Through this collection of photographs of familiar\, yet often overlooked\, spaces around this city\, I have seen God and invite you to ‘seek’ with me. Who knows what you might find? \n“God is in the detail. Draw near with faith. The signs are there.” \nThe exhibition will be celebrated with a ‘Meet the Photographer’ event on Monday 19 January 2026 at 6:30pm. \nGod is in the Detail (Photographic Exhibition by Alan\, Cathedral Verger)

SUMMARY:‘Brokenness’ – Newcastle Mothers’ Union Display for 16 Days of Activism
DESCRIPTION:From 25 November to 10 December\, Newcastle Mothers’ Union will present their annual display in the Eastern Chapels\, supporting the international ‘16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence’. \nFounded in 1876\, Mothers’ Union supports families and gives a voice to disadvantaged women. Newcastle’s branch\, established in 1882\, has been part of this mission for nearly 150 years\, campaigning all year round for causes such as those against domestic abuse. \nThis year\, the display will focus on the theme of ‘Brokenness’ – reflecting the experiences of those affected by gender-based violence: broken hearts\, broken spirits\, and broken families. \nAt the centre of the display is a cross\, roughly constructed from scrap wood\, adorned with symbols of brokenness. Alongside this\, the words from Isaiah\, spoken by Jesus\, offer hope and the promise of ‘breaking free’: \n“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me… to proclaim freedom to the captives… and to let the oppressed go free.” — Luke 4:18-19 \nVisit Newcastle Mothers’ Union’s website \nLearn more about 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence \n

SUMMARY:Patchworked Care: Dialogues on Motherhoods\, Recovery and Care Proceedings
DESCRIPTION:Join the Design Feminisms Research Group\, an inclusive feminist research group at Northumbria University’s School of Design\, for a day of interactive activities to discuss journeys of motherhoods\, recovery\, and care proceedings. \nPatchworked Care is a research project that explores how interactive textiles can help facilitate difficult conversations about the experiences women have at intersections of being in addiction/recovery and involved in care proceedings. This event will make use of research outcomes from two phases of work: creative workshops with women who are in recovery with experience of care proceedings\, and staff who support them. The event is made up of three interactive activities\, in which we invite attendees to interact with our creative research materials and to reflect on people’s experiences. \nActivity 1: exploring women’s lived experience\nActivity 2: crafting dialogues with professionals and carers\nActivity 3: opportunities for supported accommodation \nThe event is FREE to attend but ticketed to manage attendee numbers. Refreshments and lunch will be provided on the day. Please feel free to share this invite with others\, including women who may benefit from attending the event. \nThis event is part of Being Human Festival\, the UK’s national festival of the humanities\, taking place 6 – 15 November 2025. Led by the School of Advanced Study\, University of London\, with generous support from Research England\, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy. SUMMARY:WAITING LIST – Reflecting on your Relationship with Christ through the Medium of Linoprint
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, you will learn the basic skills of linoprinting while considering how this art form can help you reflect on your relationship with Christ and engage with His experiences. \nConsidering works from the two recent linoprint exhibitions at the Cathedral: ‘Jagged Edges’ (currently on display) and ‘Seeking the Disabled Christ’\, you will be invited to explore how you might express something of your own encounter with Christ in images. You will hear about how the processes involved in the practice of linoprint help the artists to express their faith\, and you will create your own print. No previous experience required! \nThe necessary tools and materials will be provided. However\, please be mindful of your clothes – this can be a messy process – please bring an apron if you wish and keep in mind that your sleeves may get inky if not protected or rolled up. Both Sarah Troughton and Rachel Holdforth will be on hand to provide guidance throughout the session. \nThis session will take place in the Cathedral’s Education Room\, which is accessible via a lift.\nIf you have any questions or find that you can no longer attend\, please email Dr Maggi Creese\, Lead Officer\, Chaplaincy to Survivors – m.creese@newcastle.anglican.org \nAbout the facilitators: \nSarah is a mother\, wife\, psychiatrist and educator (Associate Dean) working in the North East of England. She has a particular interest in the impact of trauma and moral injury through her work in both veterans’ mental health and addictions psychiatry. She has been involved in several projects in the Diocese of Newcastle\, including If I Told You What Would You Do? and Jagged Edges\, in which she has been able to use her own experiences of abuse in (and outside of) the Church to improve understanding of the impact of church-related abuse on the victims\, the wider church community and beyond\, with the aim of supporting better responses. She is also a member of the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisory Panel and has been a member of the steering group for Safe Spaces\, an independent organisation supporting those abused within the church. \nRachel (she/her) is a disabled\, neurodivergent and queer freelance disability theologian and advocate\, printmaker\, creative and spiritual director based in Newcastle upon Tyne. After completing a PhD in science\, she worked in disability support in higher education before training and serving as a spiritual director and lay chaplain. She has significant experience in spirituality\, disability theology and chaplaincy over the past decade in a variety of contexts\, including social care\, workplaces and theological education. Her website is wobblygoose.com. She is present on Instagram as @wobbly.goose. And on Bluesky as @wobblygoose.blueskysocial. \nImage: Sarah Troughton making a linocut print. SUMMARY:Calming the Storm: A Workshop Using Visio-Divina and Mindful Photography to Explore 'Jagged Edges'
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a contemplative workshop exploring and responding to ‘Jagged Edges’\, an exhibition of printmaking\, poetry and music created by and for survivors of church-related abuse. \nLife is a beautiful gift\, but that gift can have a jagged edge which wounds and leaves us in a place of fear. Jesus’ seagoing disciples were terrified when a storm blew up\, threatening to sink the boat on which their lives depended. Their fear drove them to Jesus\, who said\, ‘Peace\, Be Still.’ Through the practice of contemplative (mindful) photography\, we will explore ways in which we can pay attention to self and environment\, learning to walk with our emotions and find Peace. \nAfter lunch\, we will use the Jagged Edges installation to ‘Be Still’ through the spiritual discipline of visio-divina. This practice can help us tell our own story and be a witness to the stories of others\, enabling us to journey towards a life lived in all its fullness. All you will need is a camera or smartphone\, and a willingness to try something new. \nThis workshop will take place in the Cathedral’s Education Room\, which is wheelchair accessible.\nIf you have any questions or find that you can no longer attend\, please email Dr Maggi Creese\, Lead Officer\, Chaplaincy to Survivors – m.creese@newcastle.anglican.org \nAbout Steve Radley\, who will deliver the workshop:\nSteve is a practical theology doctoral student\, researching healing from moral injury through photographic practices of visio-divina. He holds a BTh (hons) in theology\, MSc in Psychiatry & War\, is an accredited mindfulness facilitator\, and holds certificates in counselling and MHFA. He has personal experience of mental ill-health\, having suffered from depression and anxiety following his war deployment to Afghanistan and the Gulf as an RAF Chaplain. His ministry brings together this study and personal experience. \nWAITING LIST – Reflecting on your Relationship with Christ through the Medium of Linoprint

SUMMARY:'Jagged Edges' Exhibition Launch Event
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a short prayer service\, followed by refreshments and the opportunity to explore our new exhibition\, ‘Jagged Edges’\, and meet the artists. \nIn ‘Jagged Edges’\, the artists have drawn on their own experiences of abuse and moral injury in a church context to make meaningful connections between the familiar story of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection\, and the experiences of those harmed in Christian churches. These survivors are inviting us to look at Jesus’ trauma and see his story as one of abuse and of God’s love for and solidarity with those who have been abused. They are also reaching out to the rest of the Church with an invitation to engage in the work of healing the broken relationships in Christian communities. \nThis is a free event with no pre-booking required. \nFor any enquiries\, please contact Maggi Creese at m.creese@newcastle.anglican.org \nClick here to learn about the Diocese of Newcastle’s Chaplaincy to Survivors. \nImage: ‘Crucify Him!’ by Sarah Troughton. \nWAITING LIST – Reflecting on your Relationship with Christ through the Medium of Linoprint

SUMMARY:'Jagged Edges' Printmaking\, Music & Poetry Exhibition By David Creese\, Peter Locke and Sarah Troughton
DESCRIPTION:Jagged Edges is an exhibition of printmaking\, poetry and music created by and for survivors of church-related abuse. The artists – David Creese\, Peter Locke and Sarah Troughton – draw links between their own experiences and the story of Jesus as he approached his crucifixion. \nContent warning: This exhibition includes images of torture (crucifixion) and references to moral and spiritual injuries caused by church-related abuse. \nThe Biblical ‘Stations of the Cross’ trace the path from Pilate’s house\, where Jesus was condemned to death\, to Calvary\, where he was crucified. The Chaplaincy to Survivors in the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle brought together Sarah\, David and Peter\, all of whom have personal experience of church-related abuse\, to explore the following question: ‘What happens when survivors use the Stations of the Cross as a means to speak both to their fellow survivors and to those who let them down in the communities where they were harmed?’. \nIn ‘Jagged Edges’\, each survivor has approached the Gospel Passion narratives from her or his own perspective and through a different medium – linocut prints\, music\, poetry – to co-create their own Stations of the Cross. \nThe title ‘Jagged Edges’ reflects the unique elements of survivors’ individual experiences\, which overlap but do not fit neatly together; it reflects the dissonant combination of God’s love and the harm done in and by God’s Church in those experiences\, and it reflects the fact that survivors often engage with the Church from the periphery because that is where they feel safe. \nThe new Stations draw meaningful connections between the shared narrative of Jesus’s suffering and the lived experience of individuals harmed in Christian churches. They invite us to look at Jesus’s trauma and to see his story in a particular light: as a story of abuse and as a story of God’s love for and solidarity with those who have been abused. They are also an invitation from survivors to the rest of the Church and beyond to engage in the work of repair\, reconciliation and recovery. \nClick here to learn more about the Diocese of Newcastle’s Chaplaincy to Survivors.  \nImages: ‘Foot of the Cross’\, ‘Peter’s Denial’ and ‘Simon from Cyrene’ by Sarah Troughton. \nJoin us for the following creative workshops inspired by ‘Jagged Edges’: \nWAITING LIST – Reflecting on your Relationship with Christ through the Medium of Linoprint \n \n‘Jagged Edges’ Printmaking\, Music & Poetry Exhibition By David Creese\, Peter Locke and Sarah Troughton \n \nWAITING LIST – Reflecting on your Relationship with Christ through the Medium of Linoprint

SUMMARY:'Your City\, Your Recovery' – Recovery Month Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This exhibition will now close slightly earlier than originally advertised\, with its final day on Sunday 28 September\, to allow for essential maintenance. \nRevival Newcastle is a group of passionate people\, services and organisations who are working together to support anybody with a drug\, alcohol or addiction issue. \nTimed to celebrate Recovery Month during September\, this exhibition brings together powerful voices from individuals\, groups\, and the wider Newcastle recovery community. Through art\, writing\, and treasured objects\, people have shared their journeys of recovery – each piece a testament to courage\, creativity and hope. \nThese works remind us that recovery is not only possible\, but is happening all around us\, every day\, in many different ways. They speak of resilience\, transformation\, and the strength that flourishes within community. By amplifying these voices\, the exhibition seeks to challenge stigma and offer encouragement to all who are beginning or continuing their own recovery journey. \nThis exhibition is supported by the Cathedral Lantern Project\, which exists to walk and work alongside people experiencing difficult circumstances in life. \nThe Cathedral Lantern Project

SUMMARY:'Seeking the Disabled Christ' – Exhibition by Rachel Holdforth
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition has been extended until Monday 8 September 2025.  \nTraditional portrayals of Christ often emphasise ideals of perfection\, strength and beauty. Yet\, Christ is resurrected with his wounds. His full humanity and sharing in the complete range of human experiences is as important as his divinity\, since he is Emmanuel\, God with us. \nThis collection of prints by Rachel Holdforth – a disabled\, neurodivergent and queer spiritual director\, printmaker and chaplain – challenges the conventions of beauty and perfection\, offering a powerful critique of cultural and religious norms that have historically marginalised people with disabilities. \nThrough these striking images\, Christ is depicted in solidarity with all humanity\, revealing that divinity is present in vulnerability\, difference and embodied experience. \nAbout the artist: \nRachel (she/her) is a disabled\, neurodivergent and queer freelance disability theologian and advocate\, printmaker and creative and spiritual director based in Newcastle upon Tyne. \nAfter completing a PhD in science\, she worked in disability support in higher education before training and serving as a spiritual director and lay chaplain. \nShe has significant experience in spirituality\, disability theology and chaplaincy over the past decade in a variety of contexts including social care\, workplaces and theological education. \nClick here to learn more about the exhibition. \nView Access Information for Newcastle Cathedral. \nAdditional events: \n‘Seeking the Disabled Christ’ Exhibition Launch and Celebration \n \n‘Seeking the Disabled Christ’ Networking Lunch and Quiet Afternoon \n \nOnline Talk – ‘Seeking the Disabled Christ’

DESCRIPTION:Please note: The launch of this exhibition has been postponed slightly from the originally advertised date of Monday 7 April. \nBefore emails and phones\, letters were one of the only ways to stay in touch over long distances. Here at Newcastle Cathedral\, we remember those who travelled the world\, as seen in memorials around us. But how did people stay connected? \nThis exhibition explores the rise of the postal system in the 18th century\, a time when letter writing flourished. For Newcastle and the North East\, letters carried voices across the sea\, coal mines and trade routes. They reveal personal stories\, business dealings and everyday life. \nThis exhibition has been created by Abby Hammond as part of her PhD\, in collaboration with Newcastle Cathedral\, exploring the lives of women buried at Newcastle Cathedral between 1640 and 1815.

SUMMARY:Women and Child Removal: A Story of Hope (International Women’s Day Week Event)
DESCRIPTION:Two days before International Women’s Day\, this event will celebrate women’s recovery from child removal with talks and visual and written art highlighting the voices of those who have experienced this journey. \nRecent findings indicate that child removal is a predictor of premature death in women. England has the highest rates of child removal\, with the North East being the worst affected region in the country. This situation has deteriorated significantly since the introduction of austerity measures. The trend has been linked to poverty\, as children raised in poverty are much more likely to enter care due to the unmet needs of their parents. \nIn addition to the women’s narratives\, speakers include: \n\nProfessor Karen Broadhurst\, a leading academic in child protection and family justice\nAmy Van Zyl\, CEO of Her Circle\nRepresentatives from Newcastle Cathedral\n\nTogether\, they will provide insights into the broader context within our region. The event aims to illuminate the realities of child removal in our area and explore the avenues through which women achieve recovery. \nPlease click here to book your place at this event via TicketSource. \nThe artwork on display at this event has been funded via Newcastle City Council Artist Residency Programme 24/25 and Newcastle City Learning. \n            \nHave Your Say on Cathedral Events
