SUMMARY:Patchworked Care: Dialogues on Motherhoods\, Recovery and Care Proceedings
DESCRIPTION:Join the Design Feminisms Research Group\, an inclusive feminist research group at Northumbria University’s School of Design\, for a day of interactive activities to discuss journeys of motherhoods\, recovery\, and care proceedings. \nPatchworked Care is a research project that explores how interactive textiles can help facilitate difficult conversations about the experiences women have at intersections of being in addiction/recovery and involved in care proceedings. This event will make use of research outcomes from two phases of work: creative workshops with women who are in recovery with experience of care proceedings\, and staff who support them. The event is made up of three interactive activities\, in which we invite attendees to interact with our creative research materials and to reflect on people’s experiences. \nActivity 1: exploring women’s lived experience\nActivity 2: crafting dialogues with professionals and carers\nActivity 3: opportunities for supported accommodation \nThe event is FREE to attend but ticketed to manage attendee numbers. Refreshments and lunch will be provided on the day. Please feel free to share this invite with others\, including women who may benefit from attending the event. \nThis event is part of Being Human Festival\, the UK’s national festival of the humanities\, taking place 6 – 15 November 2025. Led by the School of Advanced Study\, University of London\, with generous support from Research England\, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy. For further information\, please see beinghumanfestival.org.

SUMMARY:WAITING LIST – Reflecting on your Relationship with Christ through the Medium of Linoprint
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, you will learn the basic skills of linoprinting while considering how this art form can help you reflect on your relationship with Christ and engage with His experiences. \nConsidering works from the two recent linoprint exhibitions at the Cathedral: ‘Jagged Edges’ (currently on display) and ‘Seeking the Disabled Christ’\, you will be invited to explore how you might express something of your own encounter with Christ in images. You will hear about how the processes involved in the practice of linoprint help the artists to express their faith\, and you will create your own print. No previous experience required! \nThe necessary tools and materials will be provided. However\, please be mindful of your clothes – this can be a messy process – please bring an apron if you wish and keep in mind that your sleeves may get inky if not protected or rolled up. Both Sarah Troughton and Rachel Holdforth will be on hand to provide guidance throughout the session. \nThis session will take place in the Cathedral’s Education Room\, which is accessible via a lift.\nIf you have any questions or find that you can no longer attend\, please email Dr Maggi Creese\, Lead Officer\, Chaplaincy to Survivors – m.creese@newcastle.anglican.org \nAbout the facilitators: \nSarah is a mother\, wife\, psychiatrist and educator (Associate Dean) working in the North East of England. She has a particular interest in the impact of trauma and moral injury through her work in both veterans’ mental health and addictions psychiatry. She has been involved in several projects in the Diocese of Newcastle\, including If I Told You What Would You Do? and Jagged Edges\, in which she has been able to use her own experiences of abuse in (and outside of) the Church to improve understanding of the impact of church-related abuse on the victims\, the wider church community and beyond\, with the aim of supporting better responses. She is also a member of the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisory Panel and has been a member of the steering group for Safe Spaces\, an independent organisation supporting those abused within the church. \nRachel (she/her) is a disabled\, neurodivergent and queer freelance disability theologian and advocate\, printmaker\, creative and spiritual director based in Newcastle upon Tyne. After completing a PhD in science\, she worked in disability support in higher education before training and serving as a spiritual director and lay chaplain. She has significant experience in spirituality\, disability theology and chaplaincy over the past decade in a variety of contexts\, including social care\, workplaces and theological education. Her website is wobblygoose.com. She is present on Instagram as @wobbly.goose. And on Bluesky as @wobblygoose.blueskysocial. \nImage: Sarah Troughton making a linocut print. SUMMARY:Writing into Hope: Creative Writing Workshop with Kate Fox\, Inspired by ‘Jagged Edges’
DESCRIPTION:Join experienced creative writing facilitator Kate Fox for a welcoming and inspiring writing session. This workshop is suitable for everyone – whether you have no experience or some experience of creative writing. \nInspired by the ‘Jagged Edges’ exhibition\, we’ll use writing about images and objects to explore hope and resistance to despair\, grief\, and trauma in our own lives and in the world today. \nThrough individual writing exercises\, participants will respond to a prompt for a set period of time and then combine their lines to create a group collage poem. This session will focus on exploring writing in a nurturing environment\, incorporating breaks and pauses for reflection and introspection. There will be no pressure to share work out loud\, but participants will have opportunities to do so if they wish. \nThis session will take place in the Cathedral’s Education Room\, which is wheelchair accessible.\nIf you have any questions or find that you can no longer attend\, please email Dr Maggi Creese\, Lead Officer\, Chaplaincy to Survivors – m.creese@newcastle.anglican.org \nAbout Kate Fox:\nKate Fox is a stand-up poet\, spoken word artist and broadcaster. SUMMARY:Calming the Storm: A Workshop Using Visio-Divina and Mindful Photography to Explore 'Jagged Edges'
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a contemplative workshop exploring and responding to ‘Jagged Edges’\, an exhibition of printmaking\, poetry and music created by and for survivors of church-related abuse. \nLife is a beautiful gift\, but that gift can have a jagged edge which wounds and leaves us in a place of fear. Jesus’ seagoing disciples were terrified when a storm blew up\, threatening to sink the boat on which their lives depended. Their fear drove them to Jesus\, who said\, ‘Peace\, Be Still.’ Through the practice of contemplative (mindful) photography\, we will explore ways in which we can pay attention to self and environment\, learning to walk with our emotions and find Peace. \nAfter lunch\, we will use the Jagged Edges installation to ‘Be Still’ through the spiritual discipline of visio-divina. This practice can help us tell our own story and be a witness to the stories of others\, enabling us to journey towards a life lived in all its fullness. All you will need is a camera or smartphone\, and a willingness to try something new. \nThis workshop will take place in the Cathedral’s Education Room\, which is wheelchair accessible.\nIf you have any questions or find that you can no longer attend\, please email Dr Maggi Creese\, Lead Officer\, Chaplaincy to Survivors – m.creese@newcastle.anglican.org \nAbout Steve Radley\, who will deliver the workshop:\nSteve is a practical theology doctoral student\, researching healing from moral injury through photographic practices of visio-divina. He holds a BTh (hons) in theology\, MSc in Psychiatry & War\, is an accredited mindfulness facilitator\, and holds certificates in counselling and MHFA. He has personal experience of mental ill-health\, having suffered from depression and anxiety following his war deployment to Afghanistan and the Gulf as an RAF Chaplain. His ministry brings together this study and personal experience. \n‘Jagged Edges’ Printmaking\, Music & Poetry Exhibition By David Creese\, Peter Locke and Sarah Troughton

SUMMARY:'Jagged Edges' Printmaking\, Music & Poetry Exhibition By David Creese\, Peter Locke and Sarah Troughton
DESCRIPTION:Jagged Edges is an exhibition of printmaking\, poetry and music created by and for survivors of church-related abuse. The artists – David Creese\, Peter Locke and Sarah Troughton – draw links between their own experiences and the story of Jesus as he approached his crucifixion. \nContent warning: This exhibition includes images of torture (crucifixion) and references to moral and spiritual injuries caused by church-related abuse. \nThe Biblical ‘Stations of the Cross’ trace the path from Pilate’s house\, where Jesus was condemned to death\, to Calvary\, where he was crucified. The Chaplaincy to Survivors in the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle brought together Sarah\, David and Peter\, all of whom have personal experience of church-related abuse\, to explore the following question: ‘What happens when survivors use the Stations of the Cross as a means to speak both to their fellow survivors and to those who let them down in the communities where they were harmed?’. \nIn ‘Jagged Edges’\, each survivor has approached the Gospel Passion narratives from her or his own perspective and through a different medium – linocut prints\, music\, poetry – to co-create their own Stations of the Cross. \nThe title ‘Jagged Edges’ reflects the unique elements of survivors’ individual experiences\, which overlap but do not fit neatly together; it reflects the dissonant combination of God’s love and the harm done in and by God’s Church in those experiences\, and it reflects the fact that survivors often engage with the Church from the periphery because that is where they feel safe. \nThe new Stations draw meaningful connections between the shared narrative of Jesus’s suffering and the lived experience of individuals harmed in Christian churches. They invite us to look at Jesus’s trauma and to see his story in a particular light: as a story of abuse and as a story of God’s love for and solidarity with those who have been abused. They are also an invitation from survivors to the rest of the Church and beyond to engage in the work of repair\, reconciliation and recovery. \nClick here to learn more about the Diocese of Newcastle’s Chaplaincy to Survivors.  \nImages: ‘Foot of the Cross’\, ‘Peter’s Denial’ and ‘Simon from Cyrene’ by Sarah Troughton. \nJoin us for the following creative workshops inspired by ‘Jagged Edges’: \nCalming the Storm: A Workshop Using Visio-Divina and Mindful Photography to Explore ‘Jagged Edges’ \n \nWriting into Hope: Creative Writing Workshop with Kate Fox\, Inspired by ‘Jagged Edges’ \n \nWAITING LIST – Reflecting on your Relationship with Christ through the Medium of Linoprint

SUMMARY:Why is the Church Hurting? Exploring Moral Injury in the Church (Conference)
DESCRIPTION:The term ‘moral injury’ refers to the enduring negative emotions\, such as guilt\, shame\, anger and disgust\, experienced as a result of the violation or suppression of one’s deeply held moral code. We might acquire a moral injury when someone in a position of trust and authority betrays our shared moral values or when we ourselves act in a way that violates or fails to live up to those values. \nThis one-day conference is informed and supported by a group of survivors\, enabled by the Lead Officer of our Diocesan Chaplaincy to Survivors. It will explore what moral injury is and how it can be caused by the institution of the Church and its practices\, introduce reparative work already underway in Newcastle\, and include some guided conversation about how these injuries can be addressed in and by the Church. The day will include presentations by survivors of church-related abuse and experts in the field. \nFor more information about the event\, please contact Dr Maggi Creese (Chaplaincy to Survivors) at m.creese@newcastle.anglican.org.

SUMMARY:'Saying Goodbye' Child Loss Remembrance Service
DESCRIPTION:This ‘Saying Goodbye’ service is one in a series of international remembrance services for people who have lost a child at any stage of pregnancy\, at birth or in infancy\, whether the loss was recent or 80 years ago. In addition\, anyone who has never been able to have children for whatever reason is most welcome. \nThis event is organised by Mariposa International\, a non-religious charity that nonetheless values the significance of our nation’s great cathedrals\, minsters and abbeys. These historic spaces host some of the most important moments of public life – from coronations and royal weddings to major civic ceremonies – and acts of remembrance deserve an equally prominent place within society. \nThe services follow an Anglican structure and incorporate secular music\, poetry\, acts of remembrance\, and other reflective elements. \nAll are welcome\, and registering for your place is encouraged but not compulsory.
