SUMMARY:'Timeless' – Performed by Northumbria University BA (Hons) Theatre & Performance Students
DESCRIPTION:Journey with us through a fantastical world in which an assortment of characters you might encounter at the Cathedral – some contemporary\, some historical\, and some timeless – each navigate their path through life from struggles towards acceptance and liberation. \nCreated and performed by First Year Northumbria University BA(Hons) Theatre & Performance students\, Timeless is influenced by the students’ experiences of Newcastle Cathedral and the people and stories they have encountered here. \nGuided by Joe Hufton\, Artistic Director of the November Club theatre company\, and module tutor Liz Pavey\, students have explored creative methods for devising immersive ensemble performances. The group have met and talked with Cathedral staff\, volunteers and participants of the Cathedral Lantern Project\, which works to meet individuals experiencing dark or difficult circumstances where they are and to build reciprocal relationships of trust. \nFREE\, but places are limited\, and booking is essential. If you have any additional questions\, please email module tutor Liz Pavey – liz.pavey@northumbria.ac.uk.

SUMMARY:Why is the Church Hurting? Exploring Moral Injury in the Church (Conference)
DESCRIPTION:The term ‘moral injury’ refers to the enduring negative emotions\, such as guilt\, shame\, anger and disgust\, experienced as a result of the violation or suppression of one’s deeply held moral code. We might acquire a moral injury when someone in a position of trust and authority betrays our shared moral values or when we ourselves act in a way that violates or fails to live up to those values. \nThis one-day conference is informed and supported by a group of survivors\, enabled by the Lead Officer of our Diocesan Chaplaincy to Survivors. It will explore what moral injury is and how it can be caused by the institution of the Church and its practices\, introduce reparative work already underway in Newcastle\, and include some guided conversation about how these injuries can be addressed in and by the Church. The day will include presentations by survivors of church-related abuse and experts in the field. \nFor more information about the event\, please contact Dr Maggi Creese (Chaplaincy to Survivors) at m.creese@newcastle.anglican.org.

SUMMARY:'Saying Goodbye' Child Loss Remembrance Service
DESCRIPTION:This ‘Saying Goodbye’ service is one in a series of international remembrance services for people who have lost a child at any stage of pregnancy\, at birth or in infancy\, whether the loss was recent or 80 years ago. In addition\, anyone who has never been able to have children for whatever reason is most welcome. \nThis event is organised by Mariposa International\, a non-religious charity that nonetheless values the significance of our nation’s great cathedrals\, minsters and abbeys. These historic spaces host some of the most important moments of public life – from coronations and royal weddings to major civic ceremonies – and acts of remembrance deserve an equally prominent place within society. \nThe services follow an Anglican structure and incorporate secular music\, poetry\, acts of remembrance\, and other reflective elements. \nAll are welcome\, and registering for your place is encouraged but not compulsory. If you require further information\, please email office@sayinggoodbye.org. \n

SUMMARY:Women and Child Removal: A Story of Hope (International Women’s Day Week Event)
DESCRIPTION:Two days before International Women’s Day\, this event will celebrate women’s recovery from child removal with talks and visual and written art highlighting the voices of those who have experienced this journey. \nRecent findings indicate that child removal is a predictor of premature death in women. England has the highest rates of child removal\, with the North East being the worst affected region in the country. This situation has deteriorated significantly since the introduction of austerity measures. The trend has been linked to poverty\, as children raised in poverty are much more likely to enter care due to the unmet needs of their parents. \nIn addition to the women’s narratives\, speakers include: \n\nProfessor Karen Broadhurst\, a leading academic in child protection and family justice\nAmy Van Zyl\, CEO of Her Circle\nRepresentatives from Newcastle Cathedral\n\nTogether\, they will provide insights into the broader context within our region. The event aims to illuminate the realities of child removal in our area and explore the avenues through which women achieve recovery. \nPlease click here to book your place at this event via TicketSource. \nThe artwork on display at this event has been funded via Newcastle City Council Artist Residency Programme 24/25 and Newcastle City Learning. \n            \nHave Your Say on Cathedral Events

SUMMARY:Café 16 Open for Changing Lives Warm Meals
DESCRIPTION:Please note: Café 16 will open specially to support this event instead of its regular service. Anyone who would benefit from the meals provided by Changing Lives is warmly welcome to attend.\nThe Changing Lives Christmas Meal returns to Café 16 in the Cathedral refectory\, with meals this year prepared and served by ‘Oswinners’\, the dedicated team members from the café. Operated by the Oswin Project\, a North East charity based at HMP Northumberland\, Café 16 provides valuable training\, mentorship\, and support to individuals with criminal records who are ready to rebuild their lives. \nSince opening in 2021\, the café has offered meaningful opportunities for people to gain employment\, learn new skills\, and build a fresh start – especially important when prison leavers often face the risk of homelessness without the stability of employment. Prisoners who work for the charity inside HMP Northumberland can go on to work in the café on day release or once they have finished their sentence. This work aligns with the Cathedral’s Lantern Initiative\, which seeks to walk and work alongside those facing dark and difficult circumstances in life. \nChanging Lives began in the North East as a soup kitchen in 1970\, and they are now a nationwide charity helping people facing the most challenging of circumstances make positive change – for good. Every year\, Changing Lives support over 14\,500 people to overcome the challenges they face and go on to live happy\, independent\, fulfilling lives. They support people who are experiencing homelessness\, unemployment\, in recovery or facing abuse or exploitation. Changing Lives know that given the right support\, anyone can change their life for the better. \nThis year\, Changing Lives needs your support more than ever to provide long-term\, impactful assistance. You can help sustain this essential work by choosing to make a small monthly donation or a one-time gift\, both of which directly contribute to changing lives for the better. \nInstead of that festive coffee or Christmas card\, consider donating £5 to make a real\, lasting impact on lives this Christmas and beyond.

SUMMARY:White Ribbon Day 2024
DESCRIPTION:In the Middle Ages\, Newcastle Cathedral’s Lantern Tower was a guiding light for ships navigating the River Tyne. Today\, through our Lantern Initiative\, we aim to be a beacon of belonging for people navigating dark or difficult circumstances in life. \nThe Lantern Initiative invites you to join us for a special service of remembrance and commitment to ending violence against women. Through shared stories\, poems\, and prayers\, we will honour those who have lost their lives from gender-based violence. Together\, we will show solidarity by placing white ribbons as a public pledge never to commit\, condone or remain silent about abuse\, harassment or violence toward women. \nThe service will take place in the Cathedral Quire\, with refreshments provided before and after. During your visit\, stop by the Chapel of the Resurrection\, where a temporary installation by the Newcastle Diocese Mothers Union marks the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. \nIf you have any questions about this event\, please contact Laurie Crow\, Newcastle Cathedral’s Lantern Initiative Lead. \nLearn more about Newcastle Cathedral’s Lantern Initiative.

SUMMARY:Illuminated Sheep Evenings - 'Dreaming of Electric Sheep' - Urban Adventure Finale
DESCRIPTION:Having lit up some of the region’s most iconic landmarks\, experience ‘Illuminated Sheep’ in the Cathedral’s historic nave! \nCreated by artist Deepa Mann-Kler\, the flock of 30 life-sized sheep was inspired by the Lindisfarne Gospels’ themes of light and pilgrimage. Their travels have seen them lit up in bright colours at some of the region’s most iconic locations\, including Alnwick Garden\, Bamburgh Castle\, Hexham Abbey\, Vindolanda and Woodhorn Museum\, as well as further from home at the Bradford is Lit light festival. \nAcross three evenings\, immerse yourself in the ‘ewe-nique’ experience of getting up close with the sheep. While here\, you can enjoy refreshments in Café 16\, watch short films\, and engage in ‘baa-brilliant’ sheep-themed craft activities! \n‘Illuminated Sheep’ was commissioned by Northumberland County Council and developed and managed by Queen’s Hall Arts and the Hexham Culture Network. It was part of the Cultural Programme of Hexham High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) and funded by the North of Tyne Combined Authority\, now the new North East Combined Authority. \nThis event will operate on a timed slot basis\, with bookings available from 6:30pm to 7:45pm.
