SUMMARY:The Liturgy of Maundy Thursday
DESCRIPTION:On Maundy Thursday\, we remember the final meal Jesus shared with his disciples before his arrest. This is a time to reflect on love\, service and sacrifice as we prepare our hearts for the solemnity of Good Friday and the hope of the Resurrection. \nAs part of the service\, there will be the opportunity to participate in a foot-washing ceremony. This symbolic act\, for those who walked on dusty roads in open shoes\, may be best expressed these days in our washing of hands before eating. Therefore\, this year\, we are also offering the option of a hand-washing ceremony as an alternative\, drawing us into the same intimacy of the moment when Jesus knelt to wash the feet of his disciples. \nThe service will conclude with the Watch\, a time of quiet prayer and reflection\, expected to end at approximately 9:30pm. \nThis service will also be live-streamed via our YouTube channel (see below). \n \nView and follow along with the Order of Service (PDF). \nAll services are FREE to attend\, with no pre-booking required.

SUMMARY:The Easter Vigil
DESCRIPTION:The Easter Vigil is the first service of Easter\, held on the evening of Holy Saturday (the day before Easter Day). \nIt begins with the lighting of the New Fire\, a symbolic expectant waiting for the resurrection of Jesus on Easter morning. The large Easter candle is lit from the fire and brought into a darkened church. \nThis depiction of new life and light represents Jesus’ resurrection on the first Easter morning. The congregation then light their own candles from the Easter candle\, representing their own new life as followers of Jesus. \nThis service – featuring the Cathedral Choir – will also be live-streamed via our YouTube channel (see below). \nhttps://www.youtube.com/live/LjKk5J75944?si=heZy3OXkkD6Gmyt6 \nClick here to read and follow along with the Order of Service (PDF). \nAll services are FREE to attend\, with no pre-booking required.

SUMMARY:Danish War Sailors Memorial Service
DESCRIPTION:This annual service\, led by Newcastle’s Danish community\, marks Danish Liberation Day and celebrates the city’s longstanding connection with Denmark. \nThe international memorial honouring Danish merchant seamen – the ‘war sailors’– was unveiled at Newcastle Cathedral in 1982. All are welcome to attend this service\, during which wreaths are laid at the memorial following the Sunday Sung Eucharist. \nDuring the Second World War\, nearly 6\,000 Danish sailors served with the Allies\, becoming Denmark’s first freedom fighters. From 1940–45\, Newcastle was their ‘home town’. Each year\, the Danish Church in Newcastle gathers here on the Sunday closest to 5 May. \nClick here to learn more about the Danish Church in Newcastle.

SUMMARY:Sung Eucharist for Ascension Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we mark Ascension Day\, featuring uplifting music from the Cathedral Choir and commemorating the moment when Jesus Christ was lifted into heaven following his resurrection. \nAfter rising on Easter Day\, Jesus remained with his disciples for forty days\, teaching and preparing them for what lay ahead. On the fortieth day\, he promised that the Holy Spirit would come to them\, before being “lifted up… out of their sight.” The Ascension marks a pivotal moment in the Christian story: as Christ’s earthly ministry draws to a close\, his followers are entrusted with sharing the good news of God’s love with the world. \nImage: Featuring the Ascension Window (left)\, by Leonard C Evetts (1962-63). \nThis service will be live-streamed via our YouTube channel. \nClick here to access our current Services & Music schedule. \nAll services are free to attend\, with no pre-booking required.

SUMMARY:Sung Eucharist for the Feast of Pentecost
DESCRIPTION:The Day of Pentecost comes fifty days after Easter Day and brings the Easter season to its joyful climax. \nA major feast in the Church’s year\, Pentecost recalls the gift of the Holy Spirit to the disciples\, as told in the Acts of the Apostles. Filled with the Spirit\, they were able to proclaim the good news of God’s love in many different languages to the crowds gathered in Jerusalem. For this reason\, Pentecost is often called the “birthday” of the Church. \nImage: A carving of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove\, soaring above the Cathedral’s medieval font canopy. \nThis service will be live-streamed via our YouTube channel. \nClick here to access our current Services & Music schedule. \nAll services are free to attend\, with no pre-booking required.

SUMMARY:Sung Eucharist for the Feast of Corpus Christi
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday – 60 days after the beginning of Easter – for the Feast of Corpus Christi\, meaning ‘Body of Christ’. \nOn this day\, we give thanks for the sacramental gifts of Christ’s body and blood in Holy Communion. At the Last Supper\, Jesus invited his disciples to remember him whenever they shared bread and wine together. We continue that act of remembrance today\, each time we gather to share in Holy Communion. \nImage: ‘Eucharist’ (1996–1997)\, a sculpture by Stephen Cox\, located in the Eastern Chapels of Newcastle Cathedral. \nThis service will be live-streamed via our YouTube channel. \nClick here to access our current Services & Music schedule. \nAll services are free to attend\, with no pre-booking required.

SUMMARY:Confirmation Service
DESCRIPTION:Confirmation marks the point in the Christian journey at which you affirm for yourself the faith into which you have been baptised and your intention to live a life of faith. This affirmation is confirmed through prayer and the laying on of hands on the head\, by the confirming bishop\, as the Church asks God to give you power through the Holy Spirit to help you to live in the way of Jesus. \nIf you or someone you know is interested in being confirmed\, please get in touch with Ruth Hulse\, our Canon for Worship & Congregational Life\, who would be very pleased to speak with you. \nIf you haven’t been baptised\, don’t worry! Baptism can take place at the same time\, or beforehand.

SUMMARY:Franciscan Prayers for World Peace
DESCRIPTION:On the fourth Monday of every month\, local members of the Third Order of the Society of St Francis pray silently for peace in the Chapel of the Ascension. They then participate in the 12:30pm Eucharist and invite all who are there to have lunch together afterwards at Café 16 in the Cathedral refectory. \nEveryone is welcome to join both the prayers and the Eucharist. \nAbout the Third Order of the Society of St Francis: \nThe Third Order is a worldwide Anglican Franciscan religious order for people over the age of 18\, including both lay and ordained members\, married and single individuals\, and those of various ages and ethnic backgrounds. Members commit themselves to leading their lives according to a Rule of Life while living in their own homes\, working in the community and caring for their families. There are approximately 3\,000 members worldwide\, with 1\,700 based in Europe. \nThe aims of the Order are to make our Lord Jesus Christ known and loved everywhere\, to spread the spirit of love and harmony\, and to live simply. \nThe Order welcomes enquiries from people who are interested in joining.
