SUMMARY:‘Theology & Gender Justice’ – Afternoon talk by Ruth Harley
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Diocese of Newcastle’s Continuing Ministerial Formation (CMF) group\, this monthly seminar series meets on the first Thursday of each month to explore the fascinating and often unexpected intersections between theology and other disciplines. \nJoin Ruth Harley on Thursday 5 March for ‘Theology & Gender Justice’. Doors open at 3:30pm for a 4pm start. \n“In Christ there is no male and female”\, yet in the Church\, which is the body of Christ\, women have frequently encountered discrimination and\, even with the appointment of a female Archbishop of Canterbury\, sexism and misogyny persist. So what theological resources can we draw on to work for gender justice within and beyond the Church? And how can scripture\, theology and liturgy enable the Church to speak prophetically into significant contemporary issues of sexism and misogyny: domestic abuse\, FGM\, violent pornography\, the gender pay gap\, and more? \nRuth Harley\, parish priest and feminist theologian\, will draw on her PhD research into the vocational narratives of older women to consider how our understanding of the vocation of the Church as the body of Christ can (and should!) be expanded and enriched by taking the experience of women in the Church seriously as a site of theological meaning-making. Gender justice is not a ‘women’s issue’\, it’s an essential issue for the whole Church\, so come and grapple together with how theology can be a force for good in the struggle against patriarchy. \nPre-booking is not essential\, but it would be greatly appreciated to help us plan refreshments and seating. \nPlease note: This event will take place in a space at Newcastle Cathedral that is accessible by lift. DESCRIPTION:Please note a small change to the advertised programme. If you are not attending Evensong\, please join us from 6:30pm; the event will now begin at 6:45pm.\n—\nJoin us ahead of International Women’s Day (8 March) for the launch of a powerful new exhibition\, running from 5 March to 27 April\, which uncovers the hidden histories of women in Newcastle Prison. \nDrawing on Newcastle Prison: A History 1828–1925 (Tyne Bridge Publishing\, 2025)\, the exhibition brings to light the stories of young girls\, women affected by poverty and addiction\, and suffragettes who challenged the boundaries of their time. Together\, these voices reveal the realities of crime\, punishment and resilience in a society shaped by inequality. \nThe exhibition incorporates the ‘Story Chair’\, developed for Newcastle Cathedral in 2023 through a unique collaboration involving women with lived experience of the criminal justice system\, bringing together Changing Lives\, Northumbria University and the National Trust\, with additional support from the North East Probation Service and the British Academy. \nLaunch event programme: \n\nShort talks from all four authors of Newcastle Prison: A History 1828–1925 – Patrick Low\, Shane McCorristine\, Helen Rutherford and Clare Sandford-Couch – sharing insights into the research and stories behind the book. There will be time for questions\, with copies of the book available to purchase and the opportunity to view the exhibition.\n\n\nAn update from Changing Lives on the legacy of the Story Chair\, which has since toured several further venues\, carrying profound meaning for the women who contributed to its creation and ensuring authentic representation.\n\n\nPoetry\, folk tunes and ballads from Harry Gallagher\, Miggins Fiddle (Marina Dodgson & Maurice Condie) and Bridget Gallagher. Marina and Maurice lead the weekly folk tunes session at Café 16 in the Cathedral Refectory.\n\nThis event is ticketed on a ‘Give As You Feel’ basis\, with a suggested donation of £5. Booking is encouraged to help us plan seating. Refreshments will be available from the Oswin Project\, the charity that operates Café 16 in the Cathedral Refectory\, which gives second chances to people with criminal records. \nAfter the launch event\, the exhibition will be open free of charge during standard Cathedral opening hours – no booking required. SUMMARY:‘Theology & Poetry’ – Afternoon talk by Jay Hulme
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Diocese of Newcastle’s Continuing Ministerial Formation (CMF) group\, this monthly seminar series meets on the first Thursday of each month to explore the fascinating and often unexpected intersections between theology and other disciplines. \nJoin Jay Hulme on Thursday 5 February for ‘Theology & Poetry’. Doors open at 3:30pm for a 4pm start. \nJay Hulme is a poet\, speaker\, and theologian from Leicester\, in the UK. His books for children have been nominated for some of the UK’s oldest and most prestigious writing and illustration awards. His books for adults are published by one of the UK’s leading Christian publishers and are widely reviewed and praised\, with his poem ‘Jesus at the Gay Bar’ becoming an international sensation. Jay speaks and preaches at churches\, cathedrals\, and theological conferences\, and is a regular contributor to the BBC’s Daily Service. \nWhen he isn’t writing\, speaking\, or caring for the 1144-year-old church where he serves as churchwarden\, Jay enjoys exploring (and climbing up) the ancient churches and cathedrals that litter the British landscape\, finding inspiration in their beauty\, and in the faith which has been practised there for centuries. \nPre-booking is not essential\, but it would be greatly appreciated to help us plan refreshments and seating. \nPlease note: This event will take place in a space at Newcastle Cathedral that is accessible by lift. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Diocese of Newcastle’s Continuing Ministerial Formation (CMF) group\, this monthly seminar series meets on the first Thursday of each month to explore the fascinating and often unexpected intersections between theology and other disciplines. \nJoin Andii Bowsher on Thursday 8 January for ‘Theology & The Work of Andy Goldsworthy’. Doors open at 3:30pm for a 4pm start. \nAndy Goldsworthy’s art is ephemeral\, based in nature and often only known because it is recorded in pictures or film. It requires patience and a contemplative preparatory process. Andii has long been an admirer of the art produced and finds in it some theological touching points as well as thoughts of spirituality. \nAndii works at Northumbria University as coordinator for Spiritual Care. They also work occasionally as a tutor with Lindisfarne College of Theology and volunteer as a trustee with Green Christian. They’re a grandparent and a husband\, and this year will have been in diaconal orders for 40 years. \nPre-booking is not essential\, but it would be greatly appreciated to help us plan refreshments and seating. \nPlease note: This event will take place in a space at Newcastle Cathedral that is accessible by lift. SUMMARY:Medieval Mystery Plays – 'The Shipwright's Tale' and 'The Flood'
DESCRIPTION:Newcastle City Guides present two Miracle/Mystery plays in Newcastle Cathedral. These were originally performed on carts in the streets by working men and their apprentices\, making this an unforgettable theatre trip back in time! \n‘The Shipwright’s Tale’ is the only remaining play from the Newcastle Cycle. This will be followed by ‘The Flood’ – from the York Cycle\, which the City Guides have special permission to perform. Both are lively and unusual interpretations of Biblical tales. \nIn ‘The Shipwright’s Tale’\, the Devil is looking for a way to survive the flood\, and plans to seduce Noah’s wife so he can get the secret of how to make another ark. \nIn ‘The Flood’\, Noah has to fill the Ark with pairs of animals and his family before the deluge starts. \nThis event will be performed in the Nave\, which is fully accessible to wheelchair users. SUMMARY:‘Theology & Pop Music' – Seminar with the Revd Canon Ivor Moody
DESCRIPTION:‘Theology & Pop Music’: Finding the Sacred in the Secular: A Conversation Between Theology and Pop Music \nHosted by the Diocese of Newcastle’s Continuing Ministerial Formation (CMF) group\, this monthly seminar series takes place on the first Thursday of each month\, exploring the rich and surprising intersections between theology and other disciplines. \nJoin Ivor Moody on Thursday 4 December for ‘Theology & Pop Music’\, gathering at 3:30pm for a 4pm start. \nSurrounded by a society seemingly immersed in an ever increasing secularism Ivor takes famous\, trans-generational secular songs\, and sees how we might use them to throw new light on the scriptures\, faith and church; it is an exploration of new ways to deepen our Christian understanding\, not by turning our backs on secularism but embracing it\, to see how modern ‘soundbites’ can throw fresh light on ancient truths. \nNow retired\, Ivor Moody has been Vice Dean and Canon Pastor of Chelmsford Cathedral since 2010. He was Chair of the Mid-Essex Inter Faith Forum and also Chair of Essex Mind and Spirit\, a community voluntary organisation which seeks to promote positive relationships between faith and spirituality and mental health issues\, and to challenge the stigma which often surrounds mental health. He also served as Chaplain to the Essex County Council. \nThis event is FREE to attend – all are welcome!\nBooking essential.
