SUMMARY:WAITING LIST – Reflecting on your Relationship with Christ through the Medium of Linoprint
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, you will learn the basic skills of linoprinting while considering how this art form can help you reflect on your relationship with Christ and engage with His experiences. \nConsidering works from the two recent linoprint exhibitions at the Cathedral: ‘Jagged Edges’ (currently on display) and ‘Seeking the Disabled Christ’\, you will be invited to explore how you might express something of your own encounter with Christ in images. You will hear about how the processes involved in the practice of linoprint help the artists to express their faith\, and you will create your own print. No previous experience required! \nThe necessary tools and materials will be provided. However\, please be mindful of your clothes – this can be a messy process – please bring an apron if you wish and keep in mind that your sleeves may get inky if not protected or rolled up. Both Sarah Troughton and Rachel Holdforth will be on hand to provide guidance throughout the session. \nThis session will take place in the Cathedral’s Education Room\, which is accessible via a lift.\nIf you have any questions or find that you can no longer attend\, please email Dr Maggi Creese\, Lead Officer\, Chaplaincy to Survivors – m.creese@newcastle.anglican.org \nAbout the facilitators: \nSarah is a mother\, wife\, psychiatrist and educator (Associate Dean) working in the North East of England. She has a particular interest in the impact of trauma and moral injury through her work in both veterans’ mental health and addictions psychiatry. She has been involved in several projects in the Diocese of Newcastle\, including If I Told You What Would You Do? and Jagged Edges\, in which she has been able to use her own experiences of abuse in (and outside of) the Church to improve understanding of the impact of church-related abuse on the victims\, the wider church community and beyond\, with the aim of supporting better responses. She is also a member of the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisory Panel and has been a member of the steering group for Safe Spaces\, an independent organisation supporting those abused within the church. \nRachel (she/her) is a disabled\, neurodivergent and queer freelance disability theologian and advocate\, printmaker\, creative and spiritual director based in Newcastle upon Tyne. After completing a PhD in science\, she worked in disability support in higher education before training and serving as a spiritual director and lay chaplain. She has significant experience in spirituality\, disability theology and chaplaincy over the past decade in a variety of contexts\, including social care\, workplaces and theological education. Her website is wobblygoose.com. She is present on Instagram as @wobbly.goose. And on Bluesky as @wobblygoose.blueskysocial. \nImage: Sarah Troughton making a linocut print. SUMMARY:‘Theology& AI: Living as a Human in an AI World’ – Seminar with The Revd Canon Dr Tim Bull
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Diocese of Newcastle’s Continuing Ministerial Formation (CMF) group\, this monthly seminar series takes place on the first Thursday of each month\, exploring the rich and surprising intersections between theology and other disciplines. \nJoin the Revd Canon Dr Tim Bull on Thursday 6 November for ‘Theology& AI: Living as a Human in an AI World’\, gathering at 3:30pm for a 4pm start. \nArtificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming our lives and reshaping our future. It raises profound questions in the areas of ethics\, truth\, privacy\, creativity and what it means to be made in the image of God. Should we embrace this technology with open arms or approach it with caution? How should we live as Christian disciples in a world of AI? How might AI inform or challenge our faith? \nWhether you’re a tech enthusiast or just curious – and whether you’re a believer or not – this session will open your eyes to new ways of thinking and give you plenty to ponder. We will be guided in our exploration by the Revd Canon Dr Tim Bull. \nTim is a true polymath with PhDs in both computer science and theology. Before ordination\, he worked as a chartered software engineer\, and during his ministry\, he has taught in the areas of preaching\, leadership and Christian ethics. He is a residentiary canon at St Albans Cathedral\, a member of the Church of England’s Mission and Public Affairs Council\, and a founder of the AI Christian Partnership. \nTim’s talk on AI was “really accessible\, brilliantly communicated\, engaging and downright fun\, and the students absolutely loved it. They have been talking about it ever since!” — A theological college principal. \nWhile pre-booking is not essential\, it would be very helpful for organising refreshments and seating arrangements.  Please note: This event will take place in a space at Newcastle Cathedral that is accessible via lift. Details on how to access the space will be sent in advance.

SUMMARY:Calming the Storm: A Workshop Using Visio-Divina and Mindful Photography to Explore 'Jagged Edges'
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a contemplative workshop exploring and responding to ‘Jagged Edges’\, an exhibition of printmaking\, poetry and music created by and for survivors of church-related abuse. \nLife is a beautiful gift\, but that gift can have a jagged edge which wounds and leaves us in a place of fear. Jesus’ seagoing disciples were terrified when a storm blew up\, threatening to sink the boat on which their lives depended. Their fear drove them to Jesus\, who said\, ‘Peace\, Be Still.’ Through the practice of contemplative (mindful) photography\, we will explore ways in which we can pay attention to self and environment\, learning to walk with our emotions and find Peace. \nAfter lunch\, we will use the Jagged Edges installation to ‘Be Still’ through the spiritual discipline of visio-divina. This practice can help us tell our own story and be a witness to the stories of others\, enabling us to journey towards a life lived in all its fullness. All you will need is a camera or smartphone\, and a willingness to try something new. \nThis workshop will take place in the Cathedral’s Education Room\, which is wheelchair accessible.\nIf you have any questions or find that you can no longer attend\, please email Dr Maggi Creese\, Lead Officer\, Chaplaincy to Survivors – m.creese@newcastle.anglican.org \nAbout Steve Radley\, who will deliver the workshop:\nSteve is a practical theology doctoral student\, researching healing from moral injury through photographic practices of visio-divina. He holds a BTh (hons) in theology\, MSc in Psychiatry & War\, is an accredited mindfulness facilitator\, and holds certificates in counselling and MHFA. He has personal experience of mental ill-health\, having suffered from depression and anxiety following his war deployment to Afghanistan and the Gulf as an RAF Chaplain. His ministry brings together this study and personal experience. \n‘Jagged Edges’ Printmaking\, Music & Poetry Exhibition By David Creese\, Peter Locke and Sarah Troughton

SUMMARY:Trafalgar Day Service in Remembrance of Admiral Lord Collingwood
DESCRIPTION:Join us to mark the 220th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar at this short annual service\, hosted by the Lord Mayor’s Office. \nThe service is attended by the Lord Mayor of Newcastle and other local dignitaries\, as well as Navy personnel\, who will lay wreaths at the Cathedral’s memorial to Admiral Lord Collingwood. Members of the Collingwood Society\, dedicated to preserving his legacy\, will also be present. \nThe service is open to the public\, welcoming all who wish to commemorate the life and achievements of Admiral Collingwood. Many attendees then continue to the Collingwood Monument in Tynemouth for the annual ‘Toast to the Admiral’. \nBorn near St Nicholas’ Church (now Newcastle Cathedral)\, Vice Admiral Collingwood took command after Nelson fell at Trafalgar in 1805\, leading the British fleet to victory. He was baptised and later married at the Cathedral. \nWatch the video below\, recently produced by the Royal Grammar School\, Newcastle\, celebrating Collingwood — one of RGS’s most distinguished alumni. \n \nClick here to visit RGS’s 500th Anniversary website. \nYou may also be interested in… \n‘Local Heroes Remembered’ Tours

SUMMARY:'Jagged Edges' Exhibition Launch Event
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a short prayer service\, followed by refreshments and the opportunity to explore our new exhibition\, ‘Jagged Edges’\, and meet the artists. \nIn ‘Jagged Edges’\, the artists have drawn on their own experiences of abuse and moral injury in a church context to make meaningful connections between the familiar story of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection\, and the experiences of those harmed in Christian churches. These survivors are inviting us to look at Jesus’ trauma and see his story as one of abuse and of God’s love for and solidarity with those who have been abused. They are also reaching out to the rest of the Church with an invitation to engage in the work of healing the broken relationships in Christian communities. \nThis is a free event with no pre-booking required. \nFor any enquiries\, please contact Maggi Creese at m.creese@newcastle.anglican.org \nClick here to learn about the Diocese of Newcastle’s Chaplaincy to Survivors. \nImage: ‘Crucify Him!’ by Sarah Troughton. \n‘Jagged Edges’ Printmaking\, Music & Poetry Exhibition By David Creese\, Peter Locke and Sarah Troughton

SUMMARY:Evensong with Commissioning of LGBTQI+ Volunteer Chaplains
DESCRIPTION:  \nBishop Helen-Ann will commission two new LGBTQI+ volunteer chaplains\, Izzy McDonald-Booth and David Casati\, at a special Evensong on Sunday 21 September. Izzy and David will work in the Diocese of Newcastle’s LGBTQI+ Chaplaincy alongside Lead Chaplain\, Revd Emma Duff. \nCommenting on the appointment\, David said\, “It is important for me to be visible as a queer person in the Church and to encourage the gifts and ministries of LGBTQI+ people in our Diocese. I envisage a flexible ministry\, made of discernment\, listening\, presence\, teamwork and vision.” \nIzzy commented: “The chaplaincy is here to make sure the Church lives out its promise to be a place for all people through advocacy and pastoral support wherever it’s needed. We\, as the LGBTQI+ community\, especially right now\, need affirmation and recognition of everyone’s dignity under God\, and this is my prayer.” \nYou are warmly invited to come and celebrate with us as David and Izzy are commissioned. \nClick here to learn more about the LGBTQI+ Chaplaincy and support service within the Diocese of Newcastle — part of our shared commitment to creating a radically inclusive and welcoming Christian community. \nThis service will also be live-streamed via our YouTube channel (see below).  \nhttps://www.youtube.com/live/v1dOceWPT9A \nClick here to read and follow along with the Order of Service (PDF). \nA Radical Welcome: Beginning My Journey as LGBTQI+ Chaplain
