SUMMARY:Danish War Sailors Memorial Service
DESCRIPTION:This annual service\, led by Newcastle’s Danish community\, marks Danish Liberation Day and celebrates the city’s longstanding connection with Denmark. \nThe international memorial honouring Danish merchant seamen – the ‘war sailors’– was unveiled at Newcastle Cathedral in 1982. All are welcome to attend this service\, during which wreaths are laid at the memorial following the Sunday Sung Eucharist. \nDuring the Second World War\, nearly 6\,000 Danish sailors served with the Allies\, becoming Denmark’s first freedom fighters. From 1940–45\, Newcastle was their ‘home town’. Each year\, the Danish Church in Newcastle gathers here on the Sunday closest to 5 May. \nClick here to learn more about the Danish Church in Newcastle.

SUMMARY:Tyne & Wear Citizens - Newcastle Local Elections Assembly
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Tyne & Wear Citizens come together for a major Election Assembly ahead of the local council elections. \nThis spring’s elections are unlike any Newcastle has seen for many years. With all-out elections taking place across the city\, there is real uncertainty about who will be leading the council – and real opportunity to shape what comes next. The decisions made by the next council will affect housing\, services\, safety\, work and opportunity for years to come. \nThe Election Assembly is a chance to act together at a critical moment. Rooted in listening that has taken place across our member institutions\, the Assembly will bring hundreds of organised citizens face-to-face with candidates from across the political spectrum. We will ask them to listen carefully\, respond publicly\, and make clear commitments to work with our alliance on the issues facing our communities. \nAs always\, Tyne & Wear Citizens will remain strictly politically neutral. Candidates from all major parties and independents will be invited and held to the same standards of respect\, accountability and seriousness. Our focus is on the issues shaping people’s lives in Newcastle\, and on building strong\, constructive relationships with those elected to lead the city after May. \nThis Assembly will be a public moment of accountability and hope: communities speaking with confidence about the pressures they face\, and candidates responding before the people they seek to represent. \nTickets are required but can be booked for free. \nClick here to sign up to attend and be part of this important moment for Newcastle.

SUMMARY:Franciscan Prayers for World Peace
DESCRIPTION:On the fourth Monday of every month\, local members of the Third Order of the Society of St Francis pray silently for peace in the Chapel of the Ascension. SUMMARY:From Anger to Action: Effective Ministry in the North East in a Time of National Fragmentation
DESCRIPTION:Important: Advance bookings will close 2 weeks before the event\, i.e. on Maundy Thursday\, 2 April. If you would like to attend after this point\, please email Minister@stjurc.org.uk to register your interest. \n— \nThis workshop is organised by the Clergy Caucus of Tyne and Wear Citizens and led by the Centre for Theology and Community\, with registrations managed by Newcastle Cathedral as the workshop venue. If you have any questions about this event\, please contact the Revd Ryan Sirmons (Central Newcastle United Reformed Church) at Minister@stjurc.org.uk. \nThe Bishop of Newcastle\, the Rt Revd Dr Helen-Ann Hartley\, says: “Bringing Christian Leaders together from across the North East to share our experiences\, listen more effectively to people in our communities and collaborate to build bridges rather than walls is an act of hopeful resistance in divisive times.  This is how we live out the Christian values\, which are alive and well in our communities.  This is not to be missed!” \n— \nHow do we do effective ministry in the North East in this moment? \nHow do we listen\, acknowledge\, and act on the anger of our people? \n9.30-10am – Registration and Refreshments\n10am-12.10pm – Session 1\n12.10-1pm – Lunch break\n12.15pm – Chapel prayers\n12.45-2pm – Session 2 \nWe think it is true: a lot of people in the North East seem to feel  ‘angry and forgotten’. Some are turning to Christian nationalism. Others find increasingly polarised outlets. Our communities seem fragmented\, and many of us struggle with how to reach across these divides. We are disciples of Christ; we want to be alongside people. To do so\, we may wish to work through our faith using the tools of organising to respond to these questions: \n\nWe need to repent — turn back to God — from those practices that have insulated us from the anger that is suppurating in our neighbourhoods. What does repentance look like for us?  Where should our attention be?\nWho is giving people in the North East hope? And because we know that ‘hope has to be resourced’\, how do we resource hope?\nHow does this become discipleship?\nHow does organising work in this?\n\nLed by the Centre for Theology and Community\, this workshop will address these questions and work with each of us to identify ways we can do effective ministry alongside our communities. We’ll gather insights brought by you to create a ‘toolkit’ tailored to North East ministry\, sent out after the workshop. We will also foster a network of practice so we can all continue to be in touch about how we best address fragmentation in our North East communities. \nThis workshop is organised by the Clergy Caucus of Tyne and Wear Citizens\, with support from: The Church of England\, Diocese of Newcastle\, Jesmond United Reformed Church\, Northern Synod of the United Reformed Church\, Newcastle Cathedral\, Roman Catholic Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle\, St James’s United Reformed Church\, St Michael and All Angels Church Houghton-le-Spring\, and the Salvation Army North East Division. \nAdvance registration via TicketSource is required. Full details\, including the workshop location and advance reading\, will be shared with attendees ahead of the event.
