SUMMARY:God is in the Detail (Photographic Exhibition by Alan\, Cathedral Verger)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a photographic exhibition by Alan Edington\, Verger at Newcastle Cathedral for 15 years. \nAlan says\, “My role is all about the often-unnoticed\, behind-the-scenes care and attention that keeps this building welcoming for people from all walks of life who come to seek God. \n“I first picked up a camera in 1999 – I’m not sure why. By 2005\, feeling as though I was going around in circles\, I enrolled as a mature student at Northumbria University to study Contemporary Photography. \n“These photographs began as a personal project alongside my university work\, exploring various ideas and themes. It’s a project that has continued ever since\, with new images added recently. \n“Things are not always as clear as they seem at first glance\, and the phrase ‘The devil is in the detail’ reminds us to pay close attention. Jesus’s words\, ‘Seek\, and you shall find’\, offer a more hopeful vision of God who can be found everywhere and in everything – if we take the time to look. \n“Yet\, from the sidelines\, observing this world\, it can sometimes feel hard to see any sign of God. Perhaps\, though\, the signs are all around us – it’s just that we don’t always notice them. \n“Through this collection of photographs of familiar\, yet often overlooked\, spaces around this city\, I have seen God and invite you to ‘seek’ with me. Who knows what you might find? \n“God is in the detail. Draw near with faith. The signs are there.” \nThe exhibition will be celebrated with a ‘Meet the Photographer’ event on Monday 19 January 2026 at 6:30pm. \nGod is in the Detail: Meet the Photographer\, Alan Edington

SUMMARY:Mothers’ Union Monthly Midday Prayers and Eucharist
DESCRIPTION:2026 is a landmark anniversary year for Mothers’ Union\, the global Christian movement that has supported families and strengthened communities in the UK and around the world for 150 years. With four million members across 84 countries\, Mothers’ Union serves people of all faiths and backgrounds through practical action\, prayer\, and advocacy. \nThe Diocese of Newcastle was among the first to welcome Mothers’ Union shortly after its own founding in 1882. Emily Wilberforce\, wife of Newcastle’s first Bishop\, became the inaugural MU President. In more recent years\, MU Presidents in the diocese have also held the honorary role of Lay Canon at the Cathedral. \nMembers gather on the first Thursday of each month for Midday Prayers in St George’s Chapel at the Cathedral and are warmly invited to stay for the 12:30pm Eucharist. Before or after the service\, the group meets at Café 16 in the Cathedral refectory for fellowship and conversation. \nIf you would like to join them or find out more\, please contact the Revd Anne Marr\, Chaplain to the Mothers’ Union in Newcastle Diocese\, at chaplain@munewcastle.org.uk \n \nRead all about Mothers’ Union Newcastle’s 150th anniversary celebrations here. \n

SUMMARY:‘Theology & Gender Justice’ – Afternoon talk by Ruth Harley
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Diocese of Newcastle’s Continuing Ministerial Formation (CMF) group\, this monthly seminar series meets on the first Thursday of each month to explore the fascinating and often unexpected intersections between theology and other disciplines. \nJoin Ruth Harley on Thursday 5 March for ‘Theology & Gender Justice’. Doors open at 3:30pm for a 4pm start. \n“In Christ there is no male and female”\, yet in the Church\, which is the body of Christ\, women have frequently encountered discrimination and\, even with the appointment of a female Archbishop of Canterbury\, sexism and misogyny persist. So what theological resources can we draw on to work for gender justice within and beyond the Church? And how can scripture\, theology and liturgy enable the Church to speak prophetically into significant contemporary issues of sexism and misogyny: domestic abuse\, FGM\, violent pornography\, the gender pay gap\, and more? \nRuth Harley\, parish priest and feminist theologian\, will draw on her PhD research into the vocational narratives of older women to consider how our understanding of the vocation of the Church as the body of Christ can (and should!) be expanded and enriched by taking the experience of women in the Church seriously as a site of theological meaning-making. Gender justice is not a ‘women’s issue’\, it’s an essential issue for the whole Church\, so come and grapple together with how theology can be a force for good in the struggle against patriarchy. \nPre-booking is not essential\, but it would be greatly appreciated to help us plan refreshments and seating. \nPlease note: This event will take place in a space at Newcastle Cathedral that is accessible by lift. Full details on how to access the space will be provided in advance.
