SUMMARY:Asylum: A Long and Painful Process (Photography Exhibition by Walking With\, North Tyneside)
DESCRIPTION:How long do those seeking sanctuary in the UK wait for the Home Office decision that will determine their future? \nSix months? Six years? \nIt is rarely six months. It is often six years. Soon\, it may be much\, much longer. \nCreated by artist Sadia Sikandar – herself a refugee – with the campaigning group at Walking With charity\, this exhibition of images will be displayed ahead of Refugee Week 2026\, featuring heartbreaking personal accounts that lay bare the journeys of people seeking sanctuary in the North East. \nTheir message is this: “People fleeing torture\, persecution and war may well experience a moment of relief as they arrive on our shores – but their respite is brief. \n“Already exhausted by the challenge of escaping their homeland\, our asylum process presents them with yet another mountain to climb\, with poor living conditions and without the right to work. \n“They are left in limbo\, hoping their claim is processed before their mental health gives way under the burden of stress\, fear and uncertainty that are part of our system of asylum. \n“We challenge those in power to recognise that asylum does not have to be a long and painful process. Filled with the Spirit\, they were able to proclaim the good news of God’s love in many different languages to the crowds gathered in Jerusalem. DESCRIPTION:On the fourth Monday of every month\, local members of the Third Order of the Society of St Francis pray silently for peace in the Chapel of the Ascension. They then participate in the 12:30pm Eucharist and invite all who are there to have lunch together afterwards at Café 16 in the Cathedral refectory. \nEveryone is welcome to join both the prayers and the Eucharist. \nAbout the Third Order of the Society of St Francis: \nThe Third Order is a worldwide Anglican Franciscan religious order for people over the age of 18\, including both lay and ordained members\, married and single individuals\, and those of various ages and ethnic backgrounds. Members commit themselves to leading their lives according to a Rule of Life while living in their own homes\, working in the community and caring for their families. There are approximately 3\,000 members worldwide\, with 1\,700 based in Europe. \nThe aims of the Order are to make our Lord Jesus Christ known and loved everywhere\, to spread the spirit of love and harmony\, and to live simply. \nThe Order welcomes enquiries from people who are interested in joining. DESCRIPTION:Do you want to know more about the Bible? \nAre you interested in Faith but don’t know where to start? \nThe Bible Course from the Bible Society is an 8-session\, interactive small-group resource designed to help participants understand the ‘Big Story’ of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. \nThe course combines video teaching\, group discussion\, and daily readings to improve confidence in reading the Bible and applying it to daily life. \nThis FREE\, no-commitment course will be an opportunity to explore\, learn and ask questions in a safe and friendly space. \nSpaces are limited. The eight-week programme will begin each week at approximately 6.30pm with food\, followed by the session in a designated area of Newcastle Cathedral\, fully accessible via a lift. DESCRIPTION:Small Sounds is Newcastle Cathedral’s lively\, welcoming music-making group for children aged 0–5 and their grown-ups. \nJoin us every Tuesday morning during term time\, 10:15–10:45am\, for a joyful introduction to music. These FREE\, interactive sessions are specially designed for babies\, toddlers and preschoolers\, and are generously funded by the Cathedral Music Trust. \nLed by trained session leaders in the stunning main space of the Cathedral\, Small Sounds is open to families of all backgrounds and faiths. \nTo help us prepare for your first visit\, we ask grown-ups to register online or call TicketSource in advance. (Adult supervision is always required for children attending Small Sounds.) With four million members across 84 countries\, Mothers’ Union serves people of all faiths and backgrounds through practical action\, prayer\, and advocacy. \nThe Diocese of Newcastle was among the first to welcome Mothers’ Union shortly after its own founding in 1882. Emily Wilberforce\, wife of Newcastle’s first Bishop\, became the inaugural MU President. In more recent years\, MU Presidents in the diocese have also held the honorary role of Lay Canon at the Cathedral. \nMembers gather on the first Thursday of each month for Midday Prayers in St George’s Chapel at the Cathedral and are warmly invited to stay for the 12:30pm Eucharist. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Diocese of Newcastle’s Continuing Ministerial Formation (CMF) group\, this monthly seminar series meets on the first Thursday of each month to explore the fascinating and often unexpected intersections between theology and other disciplines. \nJoin John Appleby\, on Thursday 4 June\, for ‘Theology &… Free Will’. Doors open at 3:30pm for a 4pm start. \nDr John Appleby is a recently retired teacher of maths to engineers\, but with wider interests in education\, communication\, politics and theology. Although not an expert\, he has long been fascinated by the reality and degree of free will and its relation to choice\, responsibility and morality. He is a member of Bishop’s Council\, a churchwarden\, and former member of General Synod. \nWhatever our belief in the reality of free will\, we all think and behave on the assumption we are free to make at least some choices. Our whole moral position rests on that foundation. But developments in psychology\, sociology and medicine show that there are often fewer choices than previously thought\, so it’s unclear how much freedom we really have. And is there any difference between ‘scientific determinism’ and ‘it’s all part of God’s plan’? \nAn introduction to some different viewpoints and perspectives will be followed by some discussion about the implications of these ideas. \nPlease note: This event will take place in a space at Newcastle Cathedral that is accessible by lift. SUMMARY:Franciscan Prayers for World Peace
DESCRIPTION:On the fourth Monday of every month\, local members of the Third Order of the Society of St Francis pray silently for peace in the Chapel of the Ascension. They then participate in the 12:30pm Eucharist and invite all who are there to have lunch together afterwards at Café 16 in the Cathedral refectory. \nEveryone is welcome to join both the prayers and the Eucharist. \nAbout the Third Order of the Society of St Francis: \nThe Third Order is a worldwide Anglican Franciscan religious order for people over the age of 18\, including both lay and ordained members\, married and single individuals\, and those of various ages and ethnic backgrounds. Members commit themselves to leading their lives according to a Rule of Life while living in their own homes\, working in the community and caring for their families. There are approximately 3\,000 members worldwide\, with 1\,700 based in Europe. \nThe aims of the Order are to make our Lord Jesus Christ known and loved everywhere\, to spread the spirit of love and harmony\, and to live simply. \nThe Order welcomes enquiries from people who are interested in joining. DESCRIPTION:Do you want to know more about the Bible? \nAre you interested in Faith but don’t know where to start? \nThe Bible Course from the Bible Society is an 8-session\, interactive small-group resource designed to help participants understand the ‘Big Story’ of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. \nThe course combines video teaching\, group discussion\, and daily readings to improve confidence in reading the Bible and applying it to daily life. \nThis FREE\, no-commitment course will be an opportunity to explore\, learn and ask questions in a safe and friendly space. \nSpaces are limited. The eight-week programme will begin each week at approximately 6.30pm with food\, followed by the session in a designated area of Newcastle Cathedral\, fully accessible via a lift. Full access information will be shared in advance. DESCRIPTION:Small Sounds is Newcastle Cathedral’s lively\, welcoming music-making group for children aged 0–5 and their grown-ups. \nJoin us every Tuesday morning during term time\, 10:15–10:45am\, for a joyful introduction to music. These FREE\, interactive sessions are specially designed for babies\, toddlers and preschoolers\, and are generously funded by the Cathedral Music Trust. \nLed by trained session leaders in the stunning main space of the Cathedral\, Small Sounds is open to families of all backgrounds and faiths. \nTo help us prepare for your first visit\, we ask grown-ups to register online or call TicketSource in advance. (Adult supervision is always required for children attending Small Sounds.) Please note: You only need to book in advance ahead of the first session you plan to attend. \n\nAlongside Small Sounds\, we also run weekly after-school music programmes during term time: \n\nMini ChoriStarters – for children in Reception and Year 1\nChoriStarters – for children in Year 2\n\nIf your child would like to join either of these groups\, please email music@newcastlecathedral.org.uk for more information.
