SUMMARY:'Jagged Edges' Printmaking\, Music & Poetry Exhibition By David Creese\, Peter Locke and Sarah Troughton
DESCRIPTION:Jagged Edges is an exhibition of printmaking\, poetry and music created by and for survivors of church-related abuse. The artists – David Creese\, Peter Locke and Sarah Troughton – draw links between their own experiences and the story of Jesus as he approached his crucifixion. \nContent warning: This exhibition includes images of torture (crucifixion) and references to moral and spiritual injuries caused by church-related abuse. \nThe Biblical ‘Stations of the Cross’ trace the path from Pilate’s house\, where Jesus was condemned to death\, to Calvary\, where he was crucified. The Chaplaincy to Survivors in the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle brought together Sarah\, David and Peter\, all of whom have personal experience of church-related abuse\, to explore the following question: ‘What happens when survivors use the Stations of the Cross as a means to speak both to their fellow survivors and to those who let them down in the communities where they were harmed?’. \nIn ‘Jagged Edges’\, each survivor has approached the Gospel Passion narratives from her or his own perspective and through a different medium – linocut prints\, music\, poetry – to co-create their own Stations of the Cross. \nThe title ‘Jagged Edges’ reflects the unique elements of survivors’ individual experiences\, which overlap but do not fit neatly together; it reflects the dissonant combination of God’s love and the harm done in and by God’s Church in those experiences\, and it reflects the fact that survivors often engage with the Church from the periphery because that is where they feel safe. \nThe new Stations draw meaningful connections between the shared narrative of Jesus’s suffering and the lived experience of individuals harmed in Christian churches. They invite us to look at Jesus’s trauma and to see his story in a particular light: as a story of abuse and as a story of God’s love for and solidarity with those who have been abused. They are also an invitation from survivors to the rest of the Church and beyond to engage in the work of repair\, reconciliation and recovery. \nClick here to learn more about the Diocese of Newcastle’s Chaplaincy to Survivors.  \nImages: ‘Foot of the Cross’\, ‘Peter’s Denial’ and ‘Simon from Cyrene’ by Sarah Troughton. \nJoin us for the following creative workshops inspired by ‘Jagged Edges’: \n‘Jagged Edges’ Printmaking\, Music & Poetry Exhibition By David Creese\, Peter Locke and Sarah Troughton \n \nWriting into Hope: Creative Writing Workshop with Kate Fox\, Inspired by ‘Jagged Edges’ \n \nWAITING LIST – Reflecting on your Relationship with Christ through the Medium of Linoprint

SUMMARY:‘Theology& AI: Living as a Human in an AI World’ – Seminar with The Revd Canon Dr Tim Bull
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Diocese of Newcastle’s Continuing Ministerial Formation (CMF) group\, this monthly seminar series takes place on the first Thursday of each month\, exploring the rich and surprising intersections between theology and other disciplines. \nJoin the Revd Canon Dr Tim Bull on Thursday 6 November for ‘Theology& AI: Living as a Human in an AI World’\, gathering at 3:30pm for a 4pm start. \nArtificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming our lives and reshaping our future. It raises profound questions in the areas of ethics\, truth\, privacy\, creativity and what it means to be made in the image of God. Should we embrace this technology with open arms or approach it with caution? How should we live as Christian disciples in a world of AI? How might AI inform or challenge our faith? \nWhether you’re a tech enthusiast or just curious – and whether you’re a believer or not – this session will open your eyes to new ways of thinking and give you plenty to ponder. We will be guided in our exploration by the Revd Canon Dr Tim Bull. \nTim is a true polymath with PhDs in both computer science and theology. Before ordination\, he worked as a chartered software engineer\, and during his ministry\, he has taught in the areas of preaching\, leadership and Christian ethics. He is a residentiary canon at St Albans Cathedral\, a member of the Church of England’s Mission and Public Affairs Council\, and a founder of the AI Christian Partnership. \nTim’s talk on AI was “really accessible\, brilliantly communicated\, engaging and downright fun\, and the students absolutely loved it. They have been talking about it ever since!” — A theological college principal. \nWhile pre-booking is not essential\, it would be very helpful for organising refreshments and seating arrangements.  Please note: This event will take place in a space at Newcastle Cathedral that is accessible via lift. Details on how to access the space will be sent in advance.

SUMMARY:WAITING LIST – Reflecting on your Relationship with Christ through the Medium of Linoprint
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, you will learn the basic skills of linoprinting while considering how this art form can help you reflect on your relationship with Christ and engage with His experiences. \nConsidering works from the two recent linoprint exhibitions at the Cathedral: ‘Jagged Edges’ (currently on display) and ‘Seeking the Disabled Christ’\, you will be invited to explore how you might express something of your own encounter with Christ in images. You will hear about how the processes involved in the practice of linoprint help the artists to express their faith\, and you will create your own print. No previous experience required! \nThe necessary tools and materials will be provided. However\, please be mindful of your clothes – this can be a messy process – please bring an apron if you wish and keep in mind that your sleeves may get inky if not protected or rolled up. Both Sarah Troughton and Rachel Holdforth will be on hand to provide guidance throughout the session. \nThis session will take place in the Cathedral’s Education Room\, which is accessible via a lift.\nIf you have any questions or find that you can no longer attend\, please email Dr Maggi Creese\, Lead Officer\, Chaplaincy to Survivors – m.creese@newcastle.anglican.org \nAbout the facilitators: \nSarah is a mother\, wife\, psychiatrist and educator (Associate Dean) working in the North East of England. She has a particular interest in the impact of trauma and moral injury through her work in both veterans’ mental health and addictions psychiatry. She has been involved in several projects in the Diocese of Newcastle\, including If I Told You What Would You Do? and Jagged Edges\, in which she has been able to use her own experiences of abuse in (and outside of) the Church to improve understanding of the impact of church-related abuse on the victims\, the wider church community and beyond\, with the aim of supporting better responses. She is also a member of the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisory Panel and has been a member of the steering group for Safe Spaces\, an independent organisation supporting those abused within the church. \nRachel (she/her) is a disabled\, neurodivergent and queer freelance disability theologian and advocate\, printmaker\, creative and spiritual director based in Newcastle upon Tyne. After completing a PhD in science\, she worked in disability support in higher education before training and serving as a spiritual director and lay chaplain. She has significant experience in spirituality\, disability theology and chaplaincy over the past decade in a variety of contexts\, including social care\, workplaces and theological education. SUMMARY:Patchworked Care: Dialogues on Motherhoods\, Recovery and Care Proceedings
DESCRIPTION:Join the Design Feminisms Research Group\, an inclusive feminist research group at Northumbria University’s School of Design\, for a day of interactive activities to discuss journeys of motherhoods\, recovery\, and care proceedings. \nPatchworked Care is a research project that explores how interactive textiles can help facilitate difficult conversations about the experiences women have at intersections of being in addiction/recovery and involved in care proceedings. This event will make use of research outcomes from two phases of work: creative workshops with women who are in recovery with experience of care proceedings\, and staff who support them. The event is made up of three interactive activities\, in which we invite attendees to interact with our creative research materials and to reflect on people’s experiences. \nActivity 1: exploring women’s lived experience\nActivity 2: crafting dialogues with professionals and carers\nActivity 3: opportunities for supported accommodation \nThe event is FREE to attend but ticketed to manage attendee numbers. Refreshments and lunch will be provided on the day. Please feel free to share this invite with others\, including women who may benefit from attending the event. \nThis event is part of Being Human Festival\, the UK’s national festival of the humanities\, taking place 6 – 15 November 2025. Led by the School of Advanced Study\, University of London\, with generous support from Research England\, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy. SUMMARY:'Dona Nobis Pacem' – Durham University Choral Society
DESCRIPTION:Join Durham University Choral Society for their inaugural performance of the season\, bringing the reverence of Vaughan Williams’ ‘Dona Nobis Pacem’  and the radiance of Poulenc’s ‘Gloria’ to the stage alongside a 60-piece orchestra. \nDurham University Choral Society\, described as possessing “a warm and finely balanced” sound (The Guardian\, 2024)\, join forces with the players of Durham University’s leading Orchestras to bring a vibrant programme of choral and symphonic music to Newcastle Cathedral. \nConducted by Tim Burke (Chorus Director for Royal Northern Sinfonia Chorus and Musical Director of Tête à Tête Opera)\, the evening of music begins with the rousing ‘Gloria’ by Francis Poulenc\, a radiant work by the French 20th-century composer that spreads joyous praise with a modern twist. \nThe second half takes the audience on an extended journey influenced by the First World War from Vaughan Williams’ perspective\, with a choral-symphonic work entitled ‘Dona Nobis Pacem’ (Give Us Peace). With introspective\, slower movements and the haunting fanfares of ‘Beat! Beat! Drums’\, Williams brings these tragic memories to life and depicts the light of peace emerging through the darkness. \nWith an evening of joyous\, emotionally resonant music\, this event is not to be missed. \nPlease note: \n\nThis concert is hosted by an external organisation\, and booking fees may apply.\nFor ticket enquiries\, please email theatre.manager@durham.ac.uk or call 0191 334 1419.\nCarer tickets are available via the ticketing booking website.\nRefreshments will be available during an interval from the Friends of Nicholas\, a group dedicated to supporting and promoting the heritage of Newcastle Cathedral.\n\nEvents such as this help raise funds to maintain this beautiful building\, continue our charitable work and keep our doors open for all.

SUMMARY:‘Brokenness’ – Newcastle Mothers’ Union Display for 16 Days of Activism
DESCRIPTION:From 25 November to 10 December\, Newcastle Mothers’ Union will present their annual display in the Eastern Chapels\, supporting the international ‘16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence’. \nFounded in 1876\, Mothers’ Union supports families and gives a voice to disadvantaged women. Newcastle’s branch\, established in 1882\, has been part of this mission for nearly 150 years\, campaigning all year round for causes such as those against domestic abuse. \nThis year\, the display will focus on the theme of ‘Brokenness’ – reflecting the experiences of those affected by gender-based violence: broken hearts\, broken spirits\, and broken families. \nAt the centre of the display is a cross\, roughly constructed from scrap wood\, adorned with symbols of brokenness. Alongside this\, the words from Isaiah\, spoken by Jesus\, offer hope and the promise of ‘breaking free’: \n“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me… to proclaim freedom to the captives… and to let the oppressed go free.” — Luke 4:18-19 \nVisit Newcastle Mothers’ Union’s website \nLearn more about 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence \n
