SUMMARY:'A Story of Hope' Women's Art Display by Her Circle and Harriet Mee
DESCRIPTION:This year\, Mothering Sunday falls on 30 March — a time to reflect on and celebrate the many forms of motherhood. Throughout the month\, this exhibition will amplify the powerful voices of women who have experienced the challenges of complex motherhood and child removal. \nWritten\, visual and digital artwork provide a powerful reflection on these women’s recovery from child removal. Themes of trauma\, resilience and hope are explored. This includes art produced by the women of Her Circle and Harriet Mee. \nClick here to read our article about the story behind this powerful exhibition. \n The work debuted at an event on 6 March\, ahead of International Women’s Day. It has been funded and supported by Newcastle City Council Artist Residency Programme 24/25\, Newcastle City Learning (Funded by North East Combined Authority) and Digital Voice for Communities. \nPlease note: Due to their location\, the artworks may not always be visible or in their intended configuration\, particularly during services and large events. We recommend checking the Visitor Notices page on our website before planning your visit. \nVisitor notices \n \n

SUMMARY:Early Music @ Newcastle: Tudor-Style Organ Recital
DESCRIPTION:Newcastle University’s annual festival\, Early Music @ Newcastle\, offers an exciting programme of early music to audiences in the North East. \nJoin us for recitals on the Tudor-style Wetheringsett organ\, commemorating the tercentenary of Orlando Gibbons (pictured). \n\nMonday 3 March\, 1:05pm – David Smith\nMonday 17 March\, 1:05pm – Magnus Williamson\n\nAttendees will be encouraged to sit in the Quire\, which provides the best location for listening to the Wetheringsett Organ. \nThe Wetheringsett Organ\, currently on loan to Newcastle Cathedral from the Royal College of Organists\, was built by the organ builders Goetze & Gwynn in 2002. It is a speculative reconstruction of an English organ of around 1530\, based on the soundboard found in recent years at Wetheringsett in Suffolk. \nRecitals are free to attend\, with a retiring collection (suggested donation £5). Please consider donating\, either in person or online. \nClick here to make a regular or one-off donation. \nVisit our Organ Recitals page to view the music programme before each recital. \nFor details of the 2025 Early Music @ Newcastle festival\, please visit www.ncl.ac.uk/events/live-music/upcoming or download the programme from here 2025 Early Music @ Newcastle brochure.

SUMMARY:Conversations with Stone – Curated by Elizabeth Oughton (Exhibition)
DESCRIPTION:‘Conversations with Stone’ is a group exhibition that includes local artists\, current students and graduates from the MFA (Fine Art) programme at Newcastle University. The show explores the spiritual\, social\, cultural and economic histories of the building\, interpreted through artistic practice. \nThe exhibition\, featuring works by Alia Gargum\, Bex Etheridge\, Bridget Kennedy\, Carol McCourt\, Elizabeth Oughton\, Sarah March and Sean Auld\, will express the many voices contained within the material of the building\, inviting a wider audience into these conversations with stone. \nThe Very Revd Lee Batson\, Dean of Newcastle\, writes: \nThe Christian community in the Holy Land often refer to themselves as the “living stones”. \nIt is a self-understanding which reflects their belief that their continuous presence in the land has shaped pilgrims’ collective experience of the holy sites in Jerusalem and elsewhere as much as the stones of the buildings themselves. \nIn a similar way\, cathedrals and churches are often called “sermons in stone” – physical structures which shape the experience of those who worship within them and convey something to the wider landscape they inhabit. \nIn this cathedral\, in particular\, we also talk of the “stories in the stones”. I am delighted that we are able to host this exhibition as it explores further the way in which art in stone can shape our understanding and\, in so doing\, add to the stories that these stones exist to tell. \nHave Your Say on Cathedral Events

SUMMARY:Access: Newcastle Cathedral (Exhibition)
DESCRIPTION:Speaking Up Together Beyond Boundaries is a self-advocacy group led by adults with learning disabilities and autistic people from the local area. \nThe group first connected with Newcastle Cathedral in 2022 through a community singing group. Since then\, they’ve become regular visitors\, meeting at Café 16 in the Cathedral Refectory and leading creative workshops. \nWith support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund\, they developed a project focused on creating accessible workshops and resources. \nThey are now working on further accessible resources for neurodiverse visitors as part of the Cathedral Lantern Project\, which aims to be a beacon for people navigating difficult circumstances in life. \nThis exhibition celebrates the group’s remarkable creativity\, showcasing a selection of inspiring artwork and resources they have created. \n\n\n\n\nThe Speaking Up Together group is offering FREE accessible heritage tours for groups in March and April 2025\, subject to availability. \nIf you’re interested in learning more\, please contact Joanne at Speaking Up Together.

SUMMARY:Sung Eucharist | The Festival of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple (Candlemas)
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the Festival of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple (Candlemas). \nThe feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple\, or Candlemas\, is the final feast day in the season of Epiphany. This feast lands on 2nd February\, falling exactly 40 days after Christmas\, and brings to a close the full celebration of Jesus’ infancy narratives from Christmas and through the Epiphany season. It is the final Epiphany when Jesus is revealed as the “light for revelation to the Gentiles” and our Saviour. \nThis scene is depicted in a window by C.E. Kempe & Co. in the Cathedral’s South Aisle. (Photo courtesy of Iona Art Glass.) \nCandlemas marks the turning point of the Christian Year. It is the point where we stop\, looking back on the celebrations of Jesus’ coming at Christmas and looking forward\, moving towards Jesus’ passion. We turn from birth towards death and resurrection. We turn not simply from cradle to cross but from cradle through the cross to the empty tomb\, already visible\, albeit dimly\, through the darkness still to come. \nThis service will also be live-streamed via our YouTube channel (see below). \nhttps://youtube.com/live/IwQDgp7FXHY \nClick here to read and follow along with the Order of Service. \nClick here for our weekly Services & Music schedule.

SUMMARY:Café 16 Open for Changing Lives Warm Meals
DESCRIPTION:Please note: Café 16 will open specially to support this event instead of its regular service. Anyone who would benefit from the meals provided by Changing Lives is warmly welcome to attend.\nThe Changing Lives Christmas Meal returns to Café 16 in the Cathedral refectory\, with meals this year prepared and served by ‘Oswinners’\, the dedicated team members from the café. Operated by the Oswin Project\, a North East charity based at HMP Northumberland\, Café 16 provides valuable training\, mentorship\, and support to individuals with criminal records who are ready to rebuild their lives. \nSince opening in 2021\, the café has offered meaningful opportunities for people to gain employment\, learn new skills\, and build a fresh start – especially important when prison leavers often face the risk of homelessness without the stability of employment. Prisoners who work for the charity inside HMP Northumberland can go on to work in the café on day release or once they have finished their sentence. This work aligns with the Cathedral’s Lantern Initiative\, which seeks to walk and work alongside those facing dark and difficult circumstances in life. \nChanging Lives began in the North East as a soup kitchen in 1970\, and they are now a nationwide charity helping people facing the most challenging of circumstances make positive change – for good. Every year\, Changing Lives support over 14\,500 people to overcome the challenges they face and go on to live happy\, independent\, fulfilling lives. They support people who are experiencing homelessness\, unemployment\, in recovery or facing abuse or exploitation. Changing Lives know that given the right support\, anyone can change their life for the better. \nThis year\, Changing Lives needs your support more than ever to provide long-term\, impactful assistance. You can help sustain this essential work by choosing to make a small monthly donation or a one-time gift\, both of which directly contribute to changing lives for the better. \nInstead of that festive coffee or Christmas card\, consider donating £5 to make a real\, lasting impact on lives this Christmas and beyond.

SUMMARY:Christmas at the Cathedral 2024
DESCRIPTION:Christmas at the Cathedral returns for its 11th year\, supporting The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation\, which raises money to help detect and treat cancer. \nThis sparkling night of local celebrity appearances\, music\, song and a little bit of comedy will once again surprise audiences with a line-up of celebrity performers whose identities are always kept under wraps until the big night. \nThose who have bagged tickets in the past have watched performances by the likes of Stephen Tompkinson\, Tim Healy\, Melanie Hill\, Denise Welch\, Jimmy Nail and Maximo Park’s Paul Smith. Others have included Billy Mitchell\, Chelsea Halfpenny\, Charlie Hardwick\, Rachel Unthank\, Steffen Peddie and Viktoria Kay in typically fast-and-furious shows that switch between comedy highs and readings\, some with a ‘football theme’ plus singalongs and traditional carols. \nThe Cathedral will once again be transformed\, with top-quality lighting\, sound\, and huge TV screens on either side of the staging. \nPlease note: \n\nTickets are available via the Theatre Royal Newcastle\, and queries related to ticketing should be directed to their box office.\nThis concert is hosted by an external organisation (The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation)\, and booking fees may apply.\nNot every seat has an uninterrupted view of the performance area. However\, those seats will have a clear view of one of the performance screens.\nDoors will open at 6pm and the show’s running time will be 1hr 30mins (no interval).

SUMMARY:WAITING LIST - NE1's Search for Santa
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, NE1 welcomes families to participate in this tremendously popular sell-out event. Children collect their maps\, pencils and Santa hats before going on their adventure. Following the map\, families complete the clues across the city\, filling out the answers which give them a chance of winning a series of fantastic prizes with local businesses. \nWith stops on the way\, children can get creative at the craft checkpoints before continuing the trail. \nEnding at Newcastle Cathedral\, enjoy a wholesome and free day for the children to enjoy. There is always a merry atmosphere in the Cathedral\, and lots to do\, including face-painting\, storytelling\, creative sections and a hot chocolate station with whipped cream and marshmallows\, as well as the chance to meet the main man himself\, Santa Claus! \nWe’re pleased that NE1 will be joining forces this year with the wonderful team from Olive & Bean\, who will be running a ‘decorate your own cookie’ station in the Cathedral. Before leaving\, each child is given a free goodie bag full of Christmas treats. \nHow to take part \nIt’s completely free to take part in Search for Santa\, but you must have tickets pre-booked. This year\, you can get Search for Santa tickets from 12pm on Monday 4 November via the NE1 website.  You’ll be able to reserve tickets for a maximum of four children – be quick\, though\, as spaces move fast! \nPlease note: This event is organised by the NE1 Business Improvement District\, not Newcastle Cathedral. For any questions\, please contact NE1 directly through their website.

SUMMARY:White Ribbon Day 2024
DESCRIPTION:In the Middle Ages\, Newcastle Cathedral’s Lantern Tower was a guiding light for ships navigating the River Tyne. Today\, through our Lantern Initiative\, we aim to be a beacon of belonging for people navigating dark or difficult circumstances in life. \nThe Lantern Initiative invites you to join us for a special service of remembrance and commitment to ending violence against women. Through shared stories\, poems\, and prayers\, we will honour those who have lost their lives from gender-based violence. Together\, we will show solidarity by placing white ribbons as a public pledge never to commit\, condone or remain silent about abuse\, harassment or violence toward women. \nThe service will take place in the Cathedral Quire\, with refreshments provided before and after. During your visit\, stop by the Chapel of the Resurrection\, where a temporary installation by the Newcastle Diocese Mothers Union marks the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. \nIf you have any questions about this event\, please contact Laurie Crow\, Newcastle Cathedral’s Lantern Initiative Lead. \nLearn more about Newcastle Cathedral’s Lantern Initiative.
