SUMMARY:WAITING LIST - NE1's Search for Santa
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, NE1 welcomes families to participate in this tremendously popular sell-out event. Children collect their maps\, pencils and Santa hats before going on their adventure. Following the map\, families complete the clues across the city\, filling out the answers which give them a chance of winning a series of fantastic prizes with local businesses. \nWith stops on the way\, children can get creative at the craft checkpoints before continuing the trail. \nEnding at Newcastle Cathedral\, enjoy a wholesome and free day for the children to enjoy. There is always a merry atmosphere in the Cathedral\, and lots to do\, including face-painting\, storytelling\, creative sections and a hot chocolate station with whipped cream and marshmallows\, as well as the chance to meet the main man himself\, Santa Claus! \nWe’re pleased that NE1 will be joining forces this year with the wonderful team from Olive & Bean\, who will be running a ‘decorate your own cookie’ station in the Cathedral. Before leaving\, each child is given a free goodie bag full of Christmas treats. \nHow to take part \nIt’s completely free to take part in Search for Santa\, but you must have tickets pre-booked. This year\, you can get Search for Santa tickets from 12pm on Monday 4 November via the NE1 website.  You’ll be able to reserve tickets for a maximum of four children – be quick\, though\, as spaces move fast! \nPlease note: This event is organised by the NE1 Business Improvement District\, not Newcastle Cathedral. For any questions\, please contact NE1 directly through their website.

SUMMARY:White Ribbon Day 2024
DESCRIPTION:In the Middle Ages\, Newcastle Cathedral’s Lantern Tower was a guiding light for ships navigating the River Tyne. Today\, through our Lantern Initiative\, we aim to be a beacon of belonging for people navigating dark or difficult circumstances in life. \nThe Lantern Initiative invites you to join us for a special service of remembrance and commitment to ending violence against women. Through shared stories\, poems\, and prayers\, we will honour those who have lost their lives from gender-based violence. Together\, we will show solidarity by placing white ribbons as a public pledge never to commit\, condone or remain silent about abuse\, harassment or violence toward women. \nThe service will take place in the Cathedral Quire\, with refreshments provided before and after. During your visit\, stop by the Chapel of the Resurrection\, where a temporary installation by the Newcastle Diocese Mothers Union marks the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. \nIf you have any questions about this event\, please contact Laurie Crow\, Newcastle Cathedral’s Lantern Initiative Lead. \nLearn more about Newcastle Cathedral’s Lantern Initiative.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Clay Time - Play with Clay Children's Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop led by studio potter Amy Rutherford\, children will have the opportunity to make their own creations straight from their imagination using air-dry clay. \nThis is an informal\, child-led workshop. Children are encouraged to go where their creativity takes them\, with support on hand if required. Clay is naturally tactile\, so it enables children of any age to develop their dexterity and learn new skills. It’s lots of fun\, too! \nChildren will each be given 500g of clay and be able to choose from a selection of items to enhance their creation\, such as pipe cleaners\, sequins\, and beads. SUMMARY:Portraits with Purpose: Continuing Bonds (Exhibition)
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with St Oswald’s Hospice\, artist Leanne Pearce created 12 poignant portraits\, working with bereaved and pre-bereaved families who have accessed the hospice’s bereavement support and/or other care services. \nThe collection celebrates the lives of loved ones\, provides a positive\, creative focus for grieving or pre-bereaved families\, and supports them in their ‘continuing bonds’ process. The exhibition opens conversations about death\, dying and grief while challenging some perceptions around ‘hospice care’. \nAfter meeting with families in the autumn of 2023\, during which many helped paint the backgrounds of their portrait canvases\, Leanne completed the emotive artworks in her home studio in Newcastle. The original canvases were displayed at Newcastle Civic Centre in May 2024 and have since been gifted to the families\, who were offered support by St Oswald’s Hospice’s Bereavement Team throughout. \nThe display at Newcastle Cathedral features high-quality prints of the original artworks and the stories behind them. \nClick here for more information about the project and the families involved\, on the St Oswald’s Hospice website. \nBelow\, you can watch the moving videos created by St Oswald’s Hospice\, which accompany the exhibition. The artist\, Leanne Pearce\, will be at the Cathedral on Saturday 9 November from 10.30am – 12.30pm to speak to visitors and chat about her work.

SUMMARY:Icons on Ammunition Boxes (Exhibition)
DESCRIPTION:Icons painted on ammunition boxes will be displayed this October at Newcastle Cathedral\, serving as silent witnesses to the war in Ukraine. This is the conceptual project of Ukrainian artists Sofiia Atlantova and Oleksandr Klymenko. \nThis project\, displayed earlier this year at Guildford Cathedral and Saint Nicolas Parish Church\, Guildford\, is currently cared for in the UK by the Rotary Clubs of Guildford Chantries and Kyiv-Capital and Ukrainian Charity Foundation ‘Peli can live’. \nThe icons are for sale\, and all funds raised will support purchasing the vehicles for medical units near the frontline. \nMore details about the project:\n“Thanks to the UK benefactors\, the project has raised over £54\,000 in the UK already\, which has allowed us to buy the refrigerator vehicle to transport dead warriors with respect from the battlefields\, the armoured vehicle to transport the wounded warriors and civilians to stabilization medical station\, and an ambulance”\, says Yana Bobrova\, board member of the Rotary Club Kyiv-Capital and executive director and co-founder of ‘Peli can live’. \nThis is the ninth time the exhibition has been displayed in the UK. Since its launch\, it has been shown in 20 countries and the EU Parliament\, sharing its unique message of war and peace\, human suffering and hope with its underlying message that violence and pain can be transfigured into peace and relief. \n“The artwork is stunningly beautiful\,” says Secretary of Rotary Club Guildford Chantries\, Mike Danson. “It carries a strong message of hope and defiance.” \nSpeaking to Reuters and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in 2021\, Klymenko said: “Most people think of this war as something very far away. It was important for me to show people that the war is real\, that this ammunition box is real\, and it stored real weapons that killed real people.” \nHe told Reuters: “I don’t want this war to exist. And I don’t want this project to exist either.” \nThe artists\, Sofiia Atlantova and Oleksandr Klymenko\, both live and work in Kyiv and are graduates of the National Academy of Fine Art and Architecture.

SUMMARY:John Collingwood Bruce and the Making of Modern Hadrian's Wall (Talk by David Breeze)
DESCRIPTION:Hadrian’s Wall\, originally built to ‘separate the Romans from the barbarians’\, has evolved into a powerful symbol of unity. This was strikingly demonstrated in September 2023\, when the unexpected felling of the iconic Sycamore Gap tree sent waves of shock and sorrow across Britain and beyond. \nIn this captivating talk\, David Breeze explores the life and legacy of John Collingwood Bruce\, a key Victorian figure in the preservation and promotion of Hadrian’s Wall. Commemorated in Newcastle Cathedral\, Bruce played an instrumental role in sparking public interest and scholarly research on the Wall. His contributions include a series of influential books that remain in print today and the founding of the Hadrian’s Wall Pilgrimages\, a tradition that continues every ten years. The most recent pilgrimage\, in 2019\, the 14th of its kind\, was led by David Breeze and attracted over 200 participants. \nDavid Breeze will delve into Bruce’s lasting impact on the appreciation of Hadrian’s Wall and its significance in shaping Northern England’s cultural identity. \nAbout the Speaker: \nDavid Breeze has been involved in every Hadrian’s Wall Pilgrimage (and the Congress of Roman Frontier Studies) since 1969. He chaired the organising committee for the Pilgrimages in 1989\, 1999\, 2009\, and 2019\, most recently serving as Chief Pilgrim. A prominent figure in Roman archaeology\, David has served as President of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle and the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society\, and as Chairman of the Congress of Roman Frontier Studies. \nDavid has excavated on both Hadrian’s Wall and the Antonine Wall\, and authored several authoritative books on Roman frontiers. SUMMARY:Just Building Bridges (Sanctuary Seekers' Exhibition)
DESCRIPTION:Please note: This exhibition now launches on Wednesday 11 September. \nThis exhibition\, developed last year through a series of workshops at Newcastle’s Hatton Gallery and led by the Culture Matters co-operative\, showcases photographs\, films and zines created by refugees and sanctuary seekers. \nParticipants\, hailing from diverse countries and continents\, brought with them a wide range of backgrounds\, experiences and cultures. While some had been living in the area for years\, others were recent arrivals. All shared a common goal: to ‘build bridges’ and resettle peacefully and successfully within local communities. \nThemes and topics were chosen based on the group’s personal experiences and ideas around ‘building bridges’ to justice. This included social justice\, environmental justice\, justice in personal and social relationships\, and other aspects of justice (or its absence) that they wished to document. \nThe workshops were facilitated by Theresa Easton\, a lecturer in Fine Art at Newcastle University; Carl Joyce\, a photographer and filmmaker; and Michael Quille\, a writer and editor from the Culture Matters co-operative.
