DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the Festival of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple (Candlemas)\, with beautiful music from the Cathedral Choir. \nThe feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple\, or Candlemas\, is the final feast day in the season of Epiphany. This feast lands on 2 February\, falling exactly 40 days after Christmas\, and brings to a close the full celebration of Jesus’ infancy narratives from Christmas through the Epiphany season. It is the final Epiphany when Jesus is revealed as the “light for revelation to the Gentiles” and our Saviour. \nThis scene is depicted in a window by C.E. Kempe & Co. in the Cathedral’s South Aisle. (Photo courtesy of Iona Art Glass.) \nCandlemas marks the turning point of the Christian Year. It is the point where we stop\, looking back on the celebrations of Jesus’ coming at Christmas and looking forward\, moving towards Jesus’ passion. We turn from birth towards death and resurrection. Normally run in groups of about 6 to 10 people\, each session involves video clips\, exercises\, group discussion and time for reflection. Each session is free to attend. \n\nWhat’s life all about\, and where are we going?\nDoes God exist\, and what is He like?\nWhy is the world in such a mess?\nWho was Jesus\, and is He relevant?\nWhat does Jesus’ death on the cross mean for me today?\nHow far can I go forward with God in my life?\n\n‘Start’ will help you discover more about God\, Jesus and the journey of life. \nSpaces are limited. (Adult supervision is always required for children attending Small Sounds.) SUMMARY:Mothers’ Union Monthly Midday Prayers and Eucharist
DESCRIPTION:2026 is a landmark anniversary year for Mothers’ Union\, the global Christian movement that has supported families and strengthened communities in the UK and around the world for 150 years. With four million members across 84 countries\, Mothers’ Union serves people of all faiths and backgrounds through practical action\, prayer\, and advocacy. \nThe Diocese of Newcastle was among the first to welcome Mothers’ Union shortly after its own founding in 1882. Emily Wilberforce\, wife of Newcastle’s first Bishop\, became the inaugural MU President. In more recent years\, MU Presidents in the diocese have also held the honorary role of Lay Canon at the Cathedral. \nMembers gather on the first Thursday of each month for Midday Prayers in St George’s Chapel at the Cathedral and are warmly invited to stay for the 12:30pm Eucharist. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Diocese of Newcastle’s Continuing Ministerial Formation (CMF) group\, this monthly seminar series meets on the first Thursday of each month to explore the fascinating and often unexpected intersections between theology and other disciplines. \nJoin Jay Hulme on Thursday 5 February for ‘Theology & Poetry’. Doors open at 3:30pm for a 4pm start. \nJay Hulme is a poet\, speaker\, and theologian from Leicester\, in the UK. His books for children have been nominated for some of the UK’s oldest and most prestigious writing and illustration awards. His books for adults are published by one of the UK’s leading Christian publishers and are widely reviewed and praised\, with his poem ‘Jesus at the Gay Bar’ becoming an international sensation. Jay speaks and preaches at churches\, cathedrals\, and theological conferences\, and is a regular contributor to the BBC’s Daily Service. \nWhen he isn’t writing\, speaking\, or caring for the 1144-year-old church where he serves as churchwarden\, Jay enjoys exploring (and climbing up) the ancient churches and cathedrals that litter the British landscape\, finding inspiration in their beauty\, and in the faith which has been practised there for centuries. \nPre-booking is not essential\, but it would be greatly appreciated to help us plan refreshments and seating. \nPlease note: This event will take place in a space at Newcastle Cathedral that is accessible by lift. SUMMARY:Start: God\, Jesus and the Journey of Life in 6 Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Got questions about life and the Christian faith? \nIf you’re looking to explore faith\, then maybe it’s time to make a ‘Start’. Normally run in groups of about 6 to 10 people\, each session involves video clips\, exercises\, group discussion and time for reflection. Each session is free to attend. \n\nWhat’s life all about\, and where are we going?\nDoes God exist\, and what is He like?\nWhy is the world in such a mess?\nWho was Jesus\, and is He relevant?\nWhat does Jesus’ death on the cross mean for me today?\nHow far can I go forward with God in my life?\n\n‘Start’ will help you discover more about God\, Jesus and the journey of life. \nSpaces are limited. The six-week programme will begin each week at approximately 6.30pm with food\, followed by the session in a designated area of Newcastle Cathedral\, fully accessible via a lift.  Full access information will be shared in advance. DESCRIPTION:Join staff from the Great North Children’s Hospital for a special insight into their incredible work supporting children and families across our region. \nEnjoy a range of interactive activities and hands-on arts and crafts inspired by physiotherapy and radiology\, and meet partners from Tyne & Wear Fire Service\, Healthworks\, Newcastle Hospitals Charity and Citizens Advice to discover how they support local communities. \nAnd keep an eye out – you might even get to meet the hospital’s friendly mascot\, Fudge the Giraffe! \nThis drop-in activity day is FREE to attend with no pre-booking required and is suitable for all ages… especially families! \nPlease note: Great North Children’s Hospital staff will stop for their lunch break at 12:30pm. DESCRIPTION:The Newcastle Community Health Bus (“Monty”) will be in St Nicholas’ Square during the Pop-Up Hospital Family Fun Day inside the Cathedral. \nTake the opportunity to get a healthy heart check\, have your blood pressure measured\, monitor your cholesterol and receive friendly health advice. \nThe Newcastle Community Health Bus was established following a collaboration between Newcastle GP Services and Newcastle University’s School of Pharmacy\, initially to provide health check-ins to patients across Newcastle.
