SUMMARY:Mothers’ Union Monthly Midday Prayers and Eucharist
DESCRIPTION:2026 is a landmark anniversary year for Mothers’ Union\, the global Christian movement that has supported families and strengthened communities in the UK and around the world for 150 years. With four million members across 84 countries\, Mothers’ Union serves people of all faiths and backgrounds through practical action\, prayer\, and advocacy. \nThe Diocese of Newcastle was among the first to welcome Mothers’ Union shortly after its own founding in 1882. Emily Wilberforce\, wife of Newcastle’s first Bishop\, became the inaugural MU President. In more recent years\, MU Presidents in the diocese have also held the honorary role of Lay Canon at the Cathedral. \nMembers gather on the first Thursday of each month for Midday Prayers in St George’s Chapel at the Cathedral and are warmly invited to stay for the 12:30pm Eucharist. Before or after the service\, the group meets at Café 16 in the Cathedral refectory for fellowship and conversation. \nIf you would like to join them or find out more\, please contact the Revd Anne Marr\, Chaplain to the Mothers’ Union in Newcastle Diocese\, at chaplain@munewcastle.org.uk \n \nRead all about Mothers’ Union Newcastle’s 150th anniversary celebrations here. \n

SUMMARY:‘Theology &... Free Will' – Afternoon talk by Dr John Appleby
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Diocese of Newcastle’s Continuing Ministerial Formation (CMF) group\, this monthly seminar series meets on the first Thursday of each month to explore the fascinating and often unexpected intersections between theology and other disciplines. \nJoin John Appleby\, on Thursday 4 June\, for ‘Theology &… Free Will’. Doors open at 3:30pm for a 4pm start. \nDr John Appleby is a recently retired teacher of maths to engineers\, but with wider interests in education\, communication\, politics and theology. Although not an expert\, he has long been fascinated by the reality and degree of free will and its relation to choice\, responsibility and morality. He is a member of Bishop’s Council\, a churchwarden\, and former member of General Synod. \nWhatever our belief in the reality of free will\, we all think and behave on the assumption we are free to make at least some choices. Our whole moral position rests on that foundation. But developments in psychology\, sociology and medicine show that there are often fewer choices than previously thought\, so it’s unclear how much freedom we really have. And is there any difference between ‘scientific determinism’ and ‘it’s all part of God’s plan’? \nAn introduction to some different viewpoints and perspectives will be followed by some discussion about the implications of these ideas. \nPlease note: This event will take place in a space at Newcastle Cathedral that is accessible by lift. Open to all – please email c.pacitti@newcastle.anglican.org to express an interest.

SUMMARY:Sung Eucharist for the Feast of Corpus Christi
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday – 60 days after the beginning of Easter – for the Feast of Corpus Christi\, meaning ‘Body of Christ’. \nOn this day\, we give thanks for the sacramental gifts of Christ’s body and blood in Holy Communion. At the Last Supper\, Jesus invited his disciples to remember him whenever they shared bread and wine together. We continue that act of remembrance today\, each time we gather to share in Holy Communion. \nImage: ‘Eucharist’ (1996–1997)\, a sculpture by Stephen Cox\, located in the Eastern Chapels of Newcastle Cathedral. \nThis service will be live-streamed via our YouTube channel. \nClick here to access our current Services & Music schedule. \nAll services are free to attend\, with no pre-booking required.

SUMMARY:Confirmation Service
DESCRIPTION:Confirmation marks the point in the Christian journey at which you affirm for yourself the faith into which you have been baptised and your intention to live a life of faith. This affirmation is confirmed through prayer and the laying on of hands on the head\, by the confirming bishop\, as the Church asks God to give you power through the Holy Spirit to help you to live in the way of Jesus. \nIf you or someone you know is interested in being confirmed\, please get in touch with Ruth Hulse\, our Canon for Worship & Congregational Life\, who would be very pleased to speak with you. \nIf you haven’t been baptised\, don’t worry! Baptism can take place at the same time\, or beforehand.

SUMMARY:Peter Rabbit™: Tales on the Tyne – A Citywide Wild in Art Event in Support of St Oswald's Hospice
DESCRIPTION:In summer 2026\, a vibrant new free public art trail will bring colour and creativity to the streets\, parks and public spaces of Newcastle and North Tyneside — and we’re delighted to be part of the fun! We’ll share more about the Cathedral’s involvement as we get closer to the time. \nPeter Rabbit™: Tales on the Tyne is presented by and raising funds for St Oswald’s Hospice. The charity has partnered with creative producers Wild in Art\, The World of Peter Rabbit and Headline Partners Newcastle City Council to bring you a free\, inclusive art adventure that the whole family can enjoy. \nFollowing the success of Great North Snowdogs in 2016\, Elmer’s Great North Parade in 2019\, and Shaun on the Tyne in 2023. St Oswald’s Hospice’s fourth art trail will celebrate the charity’s 40th birthday and Beatrix Potter’s 160th anniversary. From Wednesday 15 July – Monday 14 September 2026\, Newcastle and North Tyneside will be transformed by the arrival of super-sized sculptures inspired by the much-loved character created by Beatrix Potter\, Peter Rabbit. Located alongside some of the city’s most iconic landmarks\, each Peter Rabbit sculpture will be uniquely designed by artists from the region and beyond\, providing a fun\, family-friendly art trail for locals and visitors to follow. \nA series of smaller ‘Little Peter’ sculptures\, adopted and painted by schools and community groups\, will also be displayed as part of the adventure. A trail map and App will navigate avid art adventurers across the trail\, which will be accessible via public transport\, helping you discover each sculpture and unlock a series of rewards and fun facts. \nWhilst exciting and inspiring people of all ages to celebrate our beautiful city through creativity\, the trail will also increase public awareness about hospice care and its importance and impact on our whole community. When the trail ends\, the large Peter Rabbit sculptures will be auctioned to raise funds for St Oswald’s Hospice. \nPeter Rabbit™: Tales on the Tyne is the perfect summer holiday activity\, free for all and packed full of outdoor adventure. And by getting involved\, you’ll be showing your support to the patients and families who rely on the care of St Oswald’s Hospice.
