These survivors are inviting us to look at Jesus’ trauma and see his story as one of abuse and of God’s love for and solidarity with those who have been abused. SUMMARY:'Jagged Edges' Printmaking\, Music & Poetry Exhibition By David Creese\, Peter Locke and Sarah Troughton
DESCRIPTION:Jagged Edges is an exhibition of printmaking\, poetry and music created by and for survivors of church-related abuse. The artists – David Creese\, Peter Locke and Sarah Troughton – draw links between their own experiences and the story of Jesus as he approached his crucifixion. \nContent warning: This exhibition includes images of torture (crucifixion) and references to moral and spiritual injuries caused by church-related abuse. \nThe Biblical ‘Stations of the Cross’ trace the path from Pilate’s house\, where Jesus was condemned to death\, to Calvary\, where he was crucified. The Chaplaincy to Survivors in the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle brought together Sarah\, David and Peter\, all of whom have personal experience of church-related abuse\, to explore the following question: ‘What happens when survivors use the Stations of the Cross as a means to speak both to their fellow survivors and to those who let them down in the communities where they were harmed?’. \nIn ‘Jagged Edges’\, each survivor has approached the Gospel Passion narratives from her or his own perspective and through a different medium – linocut prints\, music\, poetry – to co-create their own Stations of the Cross. \nThe title ‘Jagged Edges’ reflects the unique elements of survivors’ individual experiences\, which overlap but do not fit neatly together; it reflects the dissonant combination of God’s love and the harm done in and by God’s Church in those experiences\, and it reflects the fact that survivors often engage with the Church from the periphery because that is where they feel safe. \nThe new Stations draw meaningful connections between the shared narrative of Jesus’s suffering and the lived experience of individuals harmed in Christian churches. They invite us to look at Jesus’s trauma and to see his story in a particular light: as a story of abuse and as a story of God’s love for and solidarity with those who have been abused. DESCRIPTION:On the fourth Monday of every month\, local members of the Third Order of the Society of St Francis pray silently for peace in the Chapel of the Ascension. They then participate in the 12:30pm Eucharist and invite all who are there to have lunch together afterwards at Café 16 in the Cathedral refectory. \nEveryone is welcome to join both the prayers and the Eucharist. \nAbout the Third Order of the Society of St Francis: \nThe Third Order is a worldwide Anglican Franciscan religious order for people over the age of 18\, including both lay and ordained members\, married and single individuals\, and those of various ages and ethnic backgrounds. Members commit themselves to leading their lives according to a Rule of Life while living in their own homes\, working in the community and caring for their families. Izzy and David will work in the Diocese of Newcastle’s LGBTQI+ Chaplaincy alongside Lead Chaplain\, Revd Emma Duff. \nCommenting on the appointment\, David said\, “It is important for me to be visible as a queer person in the Church and to encourage the gifts and ministries of LGBTQI+ people in our Diocese. I envisage a flexible ministry\, made of discernment\, listening\, presence\, teamwork and vision.” \nIzzy commented: “The chaplaincy is here to make sure the Church lives out its promise to be a place for all people through advocacy and pastoral support wherever it’s needed. SUMMARY:Pop Up Choir: The Bridge Singers 10th Anniversary Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join The Bridge Singers\, a community choir of around 50 voices directed by Cheryl Camm\, for a pop-up concert in the Cathedral Nave. Founded in July 2015 and based in the villages of Felton and West Thirston in Northumberland\, the choir performs music in a wide variety of styles – from classical and folk to popular – and strives to include a balance of these in every concert. \nThe 2025–2026 season marks the choir’s 10th anniversary\, with a series of special events planned for both singers and audiences. Their performance at Newcastle Cathedral is the first of these celebrations. Throughout the anniversary year\, the choir will revisit favourite pieces from the 300 works they have sung since their formation. Earlier this year\, members voted on their top choices\, ranging from Rachmaninov to Queen\, some of which appear in today’s programme. \nThis concert is FREE to attend\, though donations are warmly welcomed to help the Cathedral continue supporting and hosting community groups and choirs. \nClick here to donate to support the Cathedral’s work.

It recognises their invaluable contribution to our communities\, our institutions\, and our nation. \nThe Cathedral will close to visitors at approximately 1:30pm to prepare for the service. DESCRIPTION:Revival Newcastle is a network of passionate people\, services and organisations working together to support anyone affected by drug\, alcohol\, or other addiction issues. \nIn recent months\, Revival has invited creative submissions from partners and the people they work with\, asking the question: “What does recovery mean to you?” \nThe responses – powerful\, personal and inspiring – have been brought together in a special exhibition at Newcastle Cathedral\, running from 10–30 September 2025 as part of Recovery Month. \nIn recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day and the impact addiction and substance misuse can have on our communities\, this event offers the chance to celebrate recovery and the hope and connection our communities can provide. Through art\, writing\, and treasured objects\, people have shared their journeys of recovery – each piece a testament to courage\, creativity and hope. \nThese works remind us that recovery is not only possible\, but is happening all around us\, every day\, in many different ways. They speak of resilience\, transformation\, and the strength that flourishes within community. By amplifying these voices\, the exhibition seeks to challenge stigma and offer encouragement to all who are beginning or continuing their own recovery journey. \nThis exhibition is supported by the Cathedral Lantern Project\, which exists to walk and work alongside people experiencing difficult circumstances in life. \nThe Cathedral Lantern Project

DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Diocese of Newcastle’s Continuing Ministerial Formation (CMF) group\, this monthly seminar series takes place on the first Thursday of each month\, exploring the rich and surprising intersections between theology and other disciplines. \nJoin Lee Taylor on Thursday 4 September for ‘Theology& Joyful Fun’\, gathering at 3:30pm for a 4pm start. \nFr Lee is the new Vicar of Berwick-Upon-Tweed and also works for OneBodyOneFaith as Chaplain to Rhythm and Member Care. In both these roles\, he strives to encourage people to encounter God’s lavish hospitality and joy. \nHe is in a Civil Partnership with Charlie\, and they are owned by two cats and a 1976 VW camper van. \nThis event is FREE to attend – all are welcome!\nBooking essential. Join us at Newcastle Cathedral for a high-energy lunchtime recital like no other. \nMatt Walters\, also known as Reductio\, has been shaking up the world of classical organ music with his genre-bending remixes. A viral TikTok sensation\, Reductio seamlessly blends the grandeur of the pipe organ with pop and dance hits. \nExpect a dazzling mix of songs by ABBA\, Coldplay\, Lady Gaga\, Kate Bush\, and more – all reimagined for the King of Instruments. \nTickets are available on a ‘Give As You Feel’ basis (suggested £7 per person). \nInformation: \n\nPre-booking would be greatly appreciated to help us plan for numbers\, but it is not compulsory.\nAdmission is free\, with a suggested donation of £7 to Newcastle Cathedral.
