SUMMARY:Stories of Sanctuary: 'Our Home' - Newcastle Summer Concert
DESCRIPTION:Experience an unforgettable evening of original songs performed by the newly formed Newcastle Sanctuary Seekers Choir. The concert will showcase the powerful voices and stories of those seeking sanctuary or who have come to consider the Cathedral or the city of Newcastle as a place of sanctuary. \nDelivered in partnership with Citizen Songwriters and The Arts Society Tyneside\, the evening will also feature singer-songwriter Sean Cooney from Teesside folk trio The Young’uns. Sean recently collaborated with Cathedral’s Recovery Church group members to write ‘See Me’\, a song highlighting the stigma surrounding addiction\, which will be performed at the event. \nThe concert is part of a North East and Yorkshire tour celebrating this year’s Refugee Week theme\, ‘Our Home’\, and promises to be a moving and inspiring evening of incredible talent and heartfelt performances. \nTickets are available on a ‘Give as You Feel’ basis\, and all proceeds will support future community songwriting workshops at Newcastle Cathedral. \n— \n‘Someday’ by Bushee\nGroup member and talented singer-songwriter Bushee’s uplifting track ‘Someday’ will be among the songs performed on Thursday 18 July. You can watch the music video below.  \n \nVideo courtesy of IMIX UK. \nOriginally written in Burmese\, Bushee has translated ‘Someday’ into English\, giving it new life and connecting his personal journey to the broader experience of seeking sanctuary in the UK. \nBushee says: “My song can represent anyone who’s apart from their loved ones… I’m very proud that my song will be released for Refugee Week\, and I’m so excited that I will get to perform it with the Stories of Sanctuary Choir\, thanks to Citizen Songwriters and IMIX UK.” \nClick the link below to find out more about ‘Someday’ and listen to the song.  \nSong For Refugee Week 2024 To Be Performed at Newcastle Cathedral

SUMMARY:The Wizarding Organ – Ewa Belmas plays The Music of Harry Potter
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special half-term treat: hear the music of Harry Potter like you’ve never heard it before\, played on the Cathedral’s magnificent organ. \nEwa Belmas\, a talented concert organist from Ukraine and now based in England\, will present a unique suite comprising her own transcriptions of John Williams’ spellbinding compositions from the first three Harry Potter movies. \nThis magical recital will last approximately 45 minutes. Potter-themed fancy dress is encouraged! \nImportant information (please read): \nNewcastle Cathedral’s weekly organ recitals are free to attend\, with a £5 suggested (but optional) donation to support the artist and help our music programme continue to thrive. Don’t forget to add Gift Aid to increase the value of your donation by 25% at no extra cost to you. \nPre-booking is encouraged so we know how many people to expect and ensure a warm welcome for all. Unfortunately\, we cannot promise you entry to the recital if you don’t book in advance. (Spaces will be allocated separately for regular organ recital attendees.) \nPlease note: \n\nThis recital\, produced by Ewa Belmas as a fundraising event for the Cathedral\, is an independent celebration of the music of Harry Potter. It is not officially endorsed or affiliated with J.K. Rowling\, Warner Bros.\, or any associated Harry Potter entities.\nSeating will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. If you plan to arrive between 12:30pm and 1pm\, we kindly request keeping noise levels to a minimum out of respect for the Eucharist service taking place elsewhere in the building.\nCafé 16 in the Cathedral Refectory will be open before the recital for snacks and refreshments.

SUMMARY:Special Spaces: A Schools' Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:An important part of the Cathedral’s mission is to welcome school groups\, particularly those that can least afford to visit. The cost-of-living crisis has led to schools and families facing greater financial pressures\, forcing them to make savings in their budgets; costly activities such as school trips are often the first to be cut from their programme. However\, learning outside the classroom is invaluable\, providing new experiences\, boosting confidence\, and fostering connections to local heritage and community. \nThanks to a grant from the St Hilda’s Trust\, which supports children and youth-focused organisations across Newcastle Diocese\, schools have been able to attend free workshops with complimentary travel. \nThe workshop theme\, ‘Special Spaces\,’ prompted students to think about what makes a place significant and encouraged them to explore their connections to different spaces. Each class was tasked with designing and creating a stained glass window reflecting this theme. There were no limitations on what medium the schools could use! \nSince 1988\, St Hilda’s Trust has regularly supported projects within the boundaries of Newcastle Diocese (Northumberland\, North Tyneside and Newcastle). \nClick here to learn more about St Hilda’s Trust. \nTo explore the Cathedral’s educational offering\, click here.
