SUMMARY:The Story Chair
DESCRIPTION:Watch this short film about the creation and development of the Story Chair. \n \nThe Story Chair was designed with women in touch with the criminal justice system in collaboration with charity Changing Lives\, Northumbria University and Newcastle Cathedral\, supported by the North East Probation Service and The British Academy. \nAs part of the project\, over 50 individuals from Newcastle\, Ashington\, North Tyneside\, and Sunderland participated in eight weeks of workshops\, honing storytelling and craft skills to illustrate their experiences – many marked by domestic violence and trauma. \nThe Cathedral’s involvement in the development of the chair came about through the Cathedral Lantern Project (formerly the Lantern Initiative)\, which takes inspiration from our iconic Lantern Tower and strives to be a beacon of light for those experiencing dark or difficult times. The Revd Jon Canessa explained\, “We wanted to ensure these women’s inspiring\, humbling and powerful stories are celebrated and heard.” \nTogether\, the women wrote complex\, emotionally difficult\, funny\, and\, most importantly\, real-life stories. The Story Chair\, crafted by Nick James from James Design\, is an abstract representation of the twists and turns of the women’s lives\, the need for a solid base and the lightness once stories have been shared\, representing the unique realities the women experienced\, while highlighting the interweaving nature of shared experience. \nFind out more about the Cathedral Lantern Project. \nHave Your Say on Cathedral Events \n \n

SUMMARY:Access: Newcastle Cathedral (Exhibition)
DESCRIPTION:Speaking Up Together Beyond Boundaries is a self-advocacy group led by adults with learning disabilities and autistic people from the local area. \nThe group first connected with Newcastle Cathedral in 2022 through a community singing group. Since then\, they’ve become regular visitors\, meeting at Café 16 in the Cathedral Refectory and leading creative workshops. \nWith support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund\, they developed a project focused on creating accessible workshops and resources. \nThey are now working on further accessible resources for neurodiverse visitors as part of the Cathedral Lantern Project\, which aims to be a beacon for people navigating difficult circumstances in life. \nThis exhibition celebrates the group’s remarkable creativity\, showcasing a selection of inspiring artwork and resources they have created. \n\n\n\n\nThe Speaking Up Together group is offering FREE accessible heritage tours for groups in March and April 2025\, subject to availability. \nIf you’re interested in learning more\, please contact Joanne at Speaking Up Together.

SUMMARY:'A Story of Hope' Women's Art Display by Her Circle and Harriet Mee
DESCRIPTION:This year\, Mothering Sunday falls on 30 March — a time to reflect on and celebrate the many forms of motherhood. Throughout the month\, this exhibition will amplify the powerful voices of women who have experienced the challenges of complex motherhood and child removal. \nWritten\, visual and digital artwork provide a powerful reflection on these women’s recovery from child removal. Themes of trauma\, resilience and hope are explored. This includes art produced by the women of Her Circle and Harriet Mee. \nClick here to read our article about the story behind this powerful exhibition. \n The work debuted at an event on 6 March\, ahead of International Women’s Day. It has been funded and supported by Newcastle City Council Artist Residency Programme 24/25\, Newcastle City Learning (Funded by North East Combined Authority) and Digital Voice for Communities. \nPlease note: Due to their location\, the artworks may not always be visible or in their intended configuration\, particularly during services and large events. We recommend checking the Visitor Notices page on our website before planning your visit. \nVisitor notices \n \n

SUMMARY:Women and Child Removal: A Story of Hope (International Women’s Day Week Event)
DESCRIPTION:Two days before International Women’s Day\, this event will celebrate women’s recovery from child removal with talks and visual and written art highlighting the voices of those who have experienced this journey. \nRecent findings indicate that child removal is a predictor of premature death in women. England has the highest rates of child removal\, with the North East being the worst affected region in the country. This situation has deteriorated significantly since the introduction of austerity measures. The trend has been linked to poverty\, as children raised in poverty are much more likely to enter care due to the unmet needs of their parents. \nIn addition to the women’s narratives\, speakers include: \n\nProfessor Karen Broadhurst\, a leading academic in child protection and family justice\nAmy Van Zyl\, CEO of Her Circle\nRepresentatives from Newcastle Cathedral\n\nTogether\, they will provide insights into the broader context within our region. The event aims to illuminate the realities of child removal in our area and explore the avenues through which women achieve recovery. \nPlease click here to book your place at this event via TicketSource. \nThe artwork on display at this event has been funded via Newcastle City Council Artist Residency Programme 24/25 and Newcastle City Learning. \n            \nHave Your Say on Cathedral Events
