SUMMARY:Women Behind Bars: Life in Newcastle Prison\, 1828–1925 (Exhibition)
DESCRIPTION:What was it like to be a woman behind bars in 19th and early-20th-century Newcastle? \nJoin us for a powerful exhibition\, coinciding with International Women’s Day (8 March)\, which uncovers the hidden histories of women in Newcastle Prison. \nDrawing on Newcastle Prison: A History 1828–1925 (Tyne Bridge Publishing\, 2025)\, the exhibition brings to light the stories of young girls\, women affected by poverty and addiction\, and suffragettes who challenged the boundaries of their time. Together\, these voices reveal the realities of crime\, punishment and resilience in a society shaped by inequality. \nThe exhibition incorporates the ‘Story Chair’\, developed for Newcastle Cathedral in 2023 through a unique collaboration involving women with lived experience of the criminal justice system. The Story Chair has since toured several other venues\, carrying profound meaning for the women who contributed to its creation and ensuring authentic representation.\n \nThe exhibition is open free of charge during the Cathedral’s standard opening hours – no booking required. \nNewcastle Prison: A History 1828–1925 is available to purchase from the Cathedral retail space and the Newcastle Gaol website. \nThe Story Chair was a collaborative project involving Changing Lives\, Northumbria University\, and the National Trust\, with additional support from the North East Probation Service and the British Academy. \nWatch the video below to learn about the development of the Story Chair\, created by North East furniture maker Nick James\, who worked closely with the women involved in the project.

If you have any questions about this event\, please contact the Revd Ryan Sirmons (Central Newcastle United Reformed Church) at Minister@stjurc.org.uk. \nThe Bishop of Newcastle\, the Rt Revd Dr Helen-Ann Hartley\, says: “Bringing Christian Leaders together from across the North East to share our experiences\, listen more effectively to people in our communities and collaborate to build bridges rather than walls is an act of hopeful resistance in divisive times.  This is how we live out the Christian values\, which are alive and well in our communities.  This is not to be missed!” \n— \nHow do we do effective ministry in the North East in this moment? \nHow do we listen\, acknowledge\, and act on the anger of our people? \n9.30-10am – Registration and Refreshments\n10am-12.10pm – Session 1\n12.10-1pm – Lunch break\n12.15pm – Chapel prayers\n12.45-2pm – Session 2 \nWe think it is true: a lot of people in the North East seem to feel  ‘angry and forgotten’. Some are turning to Christian nationalism. Others find increasingly polarised outlets. Our communities seem fragmented\, and many of us struggle with how to reach across these divides. We are disciples of Christ; we want to be alongside people. To do so\, we may wish to work through our faith using the tools of organising to respond to these questions: \n\nWe need to repent — turn back to God — from those practices that have insulated us from the anger that is suppurating in our neighbourhoods. What does repentance look like for us?  Where should our attention be?\nWho is giving people in the North East hope? And because we know that ‘hope has to be resourced’\, how do we resource hope?\nHow does this become discipleship?\nHow does organising work in this?\n\nLed by the Centre for Theology and Community\, this workshop will address these questions and work with each of us to identify ways we can do effective ministry alongside our communities. We’ll gather insights brought by you to create a ‘toolkit’ tailored to North East ministry\, sent out after the workshop. We will also foster a network of practice so we can all continue to be in touch about how we best address fragmentation in our North East communities. \nThis workshop is organised by the Clergy Caucus of Tyne and Wear Citizens\, with support from: The Church of England\, Diocese of Newcastle\, Jesmond United Reformed Church\, Northern Synod of the United Reformed Church\, Newcastle Cathedral\, Roman Catholic Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle\, St James’s United Reformed Church\, St Michael and All Angels Church Houghton-le-Spring\, and the Salvation Army North East Division. \nAdvance registration via TicketSource is required. Join us to hear tales of dreadful dragons and crafty rabbits\, take part in creative art activities\, and make your very own creature to take home. \nChoose from one of two sessions: 10–11:30am or 1:30–3pm\, and drop in anytime during these times. \nThese sessions are recommended for children aged 4–11 and their grown-ups.
