NEWCASTLE CATHEDRAL
A BEACON OF LIGHT
Baptisms
There is no fee for baptism in the Church of England – it’s God’s gift to you. The Revd Clare MacLaren, the Cathedral’s Canon for Music & Liturgy, explains some of the reasons you might want to arrange a baptism for yourself or a family member.
A new arrival in the Family
Amidst all the challenges and changes of having a new baby, many parents want to take the opportunity to give thanks for their precious new child by bringing him or her to Church to be christened – or, as we tend to call it these days – baptised.
In a baptism service, with well-loved hymns and a warm and welcoming atmosphere, we will ask God to bless your child, and you and the godparents you select will make promises to bring him or her up within the Christian faith.
Babies and children are normally baptised in the parish church where they live (you can find out which that is here). However, if you already have a connection with the Cathedral, we would be overjoyed to arrange a baptism service with you.

Ready to make a Commitment
Nowadays, more and more of us were not baptised as babies but begin to explore the Christian faith later in life and come to the point of wanting to make a Christian faith commitment in baptism. If this describes you, we would be delighted to accompany you on that journey.

Simply wanting to mark a New Beginning?
Perhaps you have recently adopted and would like a blessing for your new family? Maybe you want to mark a change of name or gender identity? If it’s important to you, it’s important to God – so please do let us know. One of the clergy team will be happy to work with you to honour the occasion and surround it with prayer.
