We are delighted to announce that the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral have granted Timothy Hone the honorary title of Organist Emeritus, in recognition of his service as Organist and Master of the Choristers at the Cathedral (1987–2002), and his wider contribution to the Church of England in the fields of music and liturgy.
Tim retired two years ago from his role at York Minster and has since returned to our diocese as Organist and Director of Music at St George’s, Cullercoats.
Speaking of Tim’s new honorary title, our Director of Music, Ian Roberts, said: “We are delighted that Tim has agreed to share his experience and expertise with us. Many speak warmly of his tenure at the Cathedral, and we celebrate all that he contributed to its rich musical heritage.”
There will be a short ceremony during Choral Evensong at 4pm on Sunday 28 September, when Tim will be formally recognised as Organist Emeritus. As part of the same service, one of our senior choristers will also be granted the honorary title of Junior Organ Scholar for the coming year.
This service will also be live-streamed via our YouTube channel (see below).
The celebrations will continue on Monday 29 September at 1.05pm with a special Organ Recital in which Tim will perform, marking his new role.
Meanwhile, our phased Organ Appeal project is progressing well. Harrison & Harrison have been contracted to design the revised organ and begin manufacturing the new console. With your support, we can make our dream a reality: first, by rebuilding the Quire Organ, and then by undertaking the full restoration of the main organ in the Cathedral’s North Transept.
Join us every Monday at 1:05pm for recitals from talented musicians, both local and from churches and cathedrals further afield. There’s no need to book in advance; simply arrive, find a seat in the Nave and enjoy the performance.
