‘A Story of Hope’ Women’s Art Display viewing times

These artworks will be on display at Newcastle Cathedral from the afternoon of 6 March until 31 March 2025. However, due to their location, they may not always be visible or in their intended configuration, particularly during services and large events.

In particular, they will be unavailable for viewing on Sunday mornings until approximately 12:30pm during our weekly Sunday Eucharist and the congregational gathering that follows.

We apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding. We hope you’ll have the opportunity to experience these remarkable artworks.

Opening time changes for Café 16

On Friday 21 March 2025, Café 16 in the Cathedral Refectory will open later than usual at 10:30am due to a private booking.

The following week, on Saturday 29 March, the café will close early at 2pm to accommodate catering for a wedding.

Scheduled changes to Cathedral opening times

On Tuesday 13 May, Newcastle Cathedral will be open to the public for worship services only. Café 16 will remain open and accessible via the East Entrance.

On Saturday 21 June, the main central area of the Cathedral, the Nave, will be closed to visitors due to a private ticketed event. The Eastern Chapels and Café 16 will remain open and accessible via the East Entrance. Evening Prayer will be held as usual in the Cathedral Quire.

Step-free access

Due to essential maintenance on our historic Lantern Tower, the main step-free West Entrance is temporarily closed. During this period, please follow the signs directing you to the East Entrance, where step-free access remains available. We have updated our website’s ‘Access Information’ page to reflect this temporary change.

Lantern Tower Maintenance: Impact & Progress

Last updated January 2025

Essential maintenance of our Lantern Tower continues to safeguard this historic structure for generations to come. This work is a collaborative effort between Newcastle City Council and Newcastle Cathedral, supported by specialist advisors Heritage Stone Access and structural engineer Charles Blackett-Ord.

Because of this ongoing maintenance, tours of our Lantern Tower did not take place in 2024. However, you can explore the structure’s fascinating history in the short film below, presented by local guide Alex Iles.

Cathedral clock and bell ringing

In addition to the step-free access changes mentioned above, please note that the clock on the Cathedral Tower may not display the correct time until we can access its internal mechanism. Furthermore, our regular bell-ringing activities are temporarily suspended during the ongoing repairs. We apologise for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as this work continues to preserve the Cathedral’s heritage.
