Ascension Day commemorates the lifting up of Jesus Christ into heaven after his resurrection.
After rising from the dead on Easter Sunday, Jesus remained with His disciples for 40 days, teaching them and preparing them. On the 40th day, Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to them and was then “lifted up… out of their sight”. Jesus’ ascension is a turning point for the disciples and a sign of what comes next in the Christian story as Jesus completes his work on earth and tells his followers to go and share the good news of God’s love with the world.
