An important part of the Cathedral’s mission is to welcome school groups, particularly those that can least afford to visit. The cost-of-living crisis has led to schools and families facing greater financial pressures, forcing them to make savings in their budgets; costly activities such as school trips are often the first to be cut from their programme. However, learning outside the classroom is invaluable, providing new experiences, boosting confidence, and fostering connections to local heritage and community.
Thanks to a grant from the St Hilda’s Trust, which supports children and youth-focused organisations across Newcastle Diocese, schools have been able to attend free workshops with complimentary travel.
The workshop theme, ‘Special Spaces,’ prompted students to think about what makes a place significant and encouraged them to explore their connections to different spaces. Each class was tasked with designing and creating a stained glass window reflecting this theme. There were no limitations on what medium the schools could use!
Since 1988, St Hilda’s Trust has regularly supported projects within the boundaries of Newcastle Diocese (Northumberland, North Tyneside and Newcastle).
