Junior Lay Clerks for the academic year 2026/27
Reporting to: Cathedral Director of Music
Contract: Fixed one year, with the possibility to extend by mutual consent. Flexible – with fees paid on a sessional basis
We are searching for our next 3x Junior Lay Clerks: 1x Alto, 1x Tenor, 1x Bass.
These roles are particularly suitable for experienced undergraduate students and those undertaking postgraduate study, but applications are welcome from any singers over the age of 18 who are at an early-career professional standard and wish to pursue cathedral singing. Past student singers have attended a range of universities across the North of England (including Newcastle, Durham and York Universities). Because much of the singing is at Sunday services, Feast Days and Festivals, it is possible to combine our roles with education, work, or other musical commitments, and it has proved a feasible opportunity for singers from within and outside the Newcastle area.
Highlights in the current academic year include the release of the Choir’s latest album, O Nata Lux: Music for Advent, Christmas & Epiphany, a Radio 3 broadcast of Choral Evensong and services at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. Similar projects are planned for next year. These roles offer excellent opportunities for young adults to gain professional experience in a vibrant and developing cathedral choir setting.
Newcastle Cathedral is committed to the care and protection of all children, young people and vulnerable adults who visit the Cathedral. We strive to be a caring community that provides a loving environment where victims can report or disclose abuse safely and where they will find support and best practices that contribute to the prevention of abuse.
Closing date for applications: Monday 30 March 2026 at 12 noon
We encourage early applications, and interviews will take place as and when possible for candidates and the interview panel.
