This annual service, led by Newcastle’s Danish community, marks Danish Liberation Day and celebrates the city’s longstanding connection with Denmark.
The international memorial honouring Danish merchant seamen – the ‘war sailors’– was unveiled at Newcastle Cathedral in 1982. All are welcome to attend this service, during which wreaths are laid at the memorial following the Sunday Sung Eucharist.
During the Second World War, nearly 6,000 Danish sailors served with the Allies, becoming Denmark’s first freedom fighters. From 1940–45, Newcastle was their ‘home town’. Each year, the Danish Church in Newcastle gathers here on the Sunday closest to 5 May.
