Become a Friend

Membership is open to all!

The Friends of St Nicholas enjoy the fellowship of a shared enthusiasm for the witness to the presence of God in our midst, and of the special place of this Cathedral Church.

Friends receive regular newsletters which outline recent and proposed developments. The Friends’ AGM each spring is enlivened with guest speakers from many different and exciting avenues of life.

Outings and events provide further opportunities to meet and share our mutual interests. Our service, subscriptions and gifts benefit the work of God in this holy place.

The Spirit of St Nicholas

Newcastle Cathedral is dedicated to St Nicholas – the historic inspiration for Santa Claus and 4th century Bishop of Myra, who was famed for his generosity and charitable giving.

By becoming a Friend, you are keeping his spirit alive.

In the past, Friends have contributed to repairs to stonework, the Cathedral organ, restoration of silver, to sound systems, pianos, the design and creation of new copes for the Dean and Residentiary Canons, the redevelopment of the Thomlinson Room and much more.

New liturgical furniture – consisting of a striking modern altar and ambo (lectern), together with beautiful choir stalls – was commissioned in 2021, thanks to a generous bequest courtesy of the Friends.

If you are interested in becoming a Friend of St Nicholas, please fill out the membership leaflet, fill it out and send it to the address below.

By prayer, work and financial support The Friends help to sustain the life and work of Newcastle Cathedral, to maintain the heritage of the building and enhance and beautify the fabric of this sacred place.
