Canon for Mission

Stipend: £31,283 per annum. The role will be offered under Common Tenure.

This post carries primary responsibility for overseeing and developing the Cathedral’s mission, particularly its deep commitment to social justice and ministry among the marginalised.

The postholder will join the Cathedral and Diocese at a very exciting time. The Cathedral has undergone a rapid and profound transformation, offering ‘Radical Welcome’, ‘Inspiring Worship’ and ‘Empowering Worth’. Inspired by our God-given values, Newcastle Cathedral has given particular missional emphasis to challenging unjust structures and responding to human need through loving service. Your role as Canon for Mission will be to build on this work so that we make an even bigger impact in our city and wider Diocese.

As well as being one of three Canons totally resident in the Cathedral and an executive member of Chapter, the post holder will:

  • Develop partnerships with organisations, faith communities, individuals and the wider Diocese to further our work in growing our prophetic witness regarding social justice.
  • Be the line manager for two Learning and Engagement Officers and the Volunteer Coordinator, with an emphasis on sharing our deep commitment to social justice and community engagement.
  • Serve as Chapter Safeguarding Lead, overseeing and supporting the work of the Cathedral Safeguarding Officer and ensuring the Cathedral continues to be a safe and welcoming place to all.

We are looking for someone passionate and excited about the possibilities of ministry in a cathedral and who is committed to being part of a praying team of clergy. This matters more than whether a candidate feels they fulfil all the requirements in the person specification and role description, and the Dean would be very happy to have informal conversations with anyone who wants to find out more (dean@newcastlecathedral.org.uk).

Choral Scholarships

Duration of Scholarship: 1 year, sometimes extendable for a further year by mutual agreement

Bursary: £3,509.95

The Choral Scholars play a fundamental role in the Cathedral’s mission and ministry; as such, they are a valued part of the team of those that contributes to worship at Newcastle Cathedral.

Most of our scholars combine the role with university study at the University of Newcastle, Northumbria University, or the University of Durham (undergraduate or postgraduate). It is expected that some candidates will be reading a degree in Music, but the scholarship opportunity is open to those studying any academic subject. Applications from potential Choral Scholar candidates planning a ‘gap year’ will also be considered, but it should be stressed that no Choral Scholar accommodation is available at the present time.

Hours of Commitment during Cathedral Choir term time for the 24/25 Choral Scholars will be reviewed and confirmed in early June. Typically, scholars should expect to sing for two services on a Sunday, with an additional average of two or three Evensongs per week on weekdays/Saturdays.

For further information about the Choral Scholarship, please email Tim Cranfield (tim.cranfield@newcastlecathedral.org.uk) to schedule a telephone appointment.

Please send your completed Application Form, which includes details of referees, and signed Confidential Declaration Form, by email marked ‘Choral Scholarship Application’ to isabel.hunt@newcastlecathedral.org.uk

The Confidential Declaration Form must be hand or electronically signed. Unfortunately, we cannot accept names typed into the signature field. You may return the Confidential Declaration Form by the closing date by email (see email address above) or post (see Information Pack for details).
